USC offers, but question remains: where will Tausili Akana land this fall?

By Paul Honda on March 23, 2021

A part of Tausili Akana wants to stay grounded. As in, grounded in his neighborhood of Hauula. The former Kamehameha student-athlete made a crucial move to Utah last summer, playing his sophomore season at Wasatch High School in Heber City. His stellar play for the 5A semifinalist team netted new offers from UNLV, Oregon State, Utah State, Nebraska and Oklahoma State during the 2020 fall season — while high school fall sports in Hawaii were postponed. In the winter, more […]

Ole Miss enters chase for sophomore LB Tausili Akana

By Paul Honda on March 3, 2021

Tausili Akana is crossing borderlines again. Ole Miss is the latest football program to make a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-4, 220-pound sophomore. “It’s a big surprise to get my first SEC offer. Ole Miss is a very well-known program with great history and coaches,” Akana said on Wednesday morning. “One of my favorite movies of all time is ‘Blind Side.’ I’m excited for this opportunity. It makes me want to work harder.” Akana is fresh off the heels of […]

ILH football: One more delay, new start date is Mar. 15

By Paul Honda on February 22, 2021

The delay of football in the ever-shifting timeline of prep sports in Hawaii is no surprise. The Interscholastic League of Honolulu’s start date of the postponed football season was scheduled for today — Feb. 22 — but has been delayed to Mar. 15. The league had already cancelled most fall and winter sports. While public-school leagues cancelled football in January, the ILH remained persistent and consistent about keeping the sport alive in an academic year altered severely by the COVID-19 […]

Season at Skyridge pays off for Kamehameha’s Kia‘i Keone

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2021

Last summer, Kia‘i Keone transferred to a school in Utah for a chance to play football. It turned out to be a winning move. The Kamehameha quarterback played in eight games for powerhouse Skyridge, drawing attention from a few colleges in the Rockies. On Wednesday, Keone signed a letter of intent with Colorado Mesa. “It’s a Division II school and a great program to play football in. The coaches showed me they really wanted me to be there,” said Keone, […]

Kamehameha long snapper Hiapo Ka‘apana ranks No. 2 nationally

By Paul Honda on January 19, 2021

Hiapo Ka‘apana understands, now, the power of suggestion. The Kamehameha student-athlete left the islands on Friday as a relative unknown who had yet to play a down as a varsity football player. He returned from Las Vegas on Monday as the nation’s No. 2 long snapper — including junior-college players. Ka‘apana competed at the Chris Rubio Long Snapping Camp against roughly 100 long snappers. Held in conjunction with the Chris Sailer Kicking Camp, snappers got a first look on Friday […]

Oregon offer makes it 10 for Kamehameha/Wasatch sophomore Tausili Akana

By Paul Honda on December 23, 2020

Oregon noticed a young man from Hawaii playing football in cold Heber City, Utah, and decided to make a life-altering offer. Kamehameha/Wasatch sophomore Tausili Akana is stoked about all 10 of his football scholarship offers. Something about this opportunity with the Ducks has a different vibe from the speedy 6-foot-4, 210-pound outside linebacker/running back. “I’m definitely blessed and excited about this offer. I have been in contact with them, but it was still as surprise,” Akana said on Monday before […]

Kamehameha lineman Kuao Peihopa joins Washington’s tough defense

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2020

The Washington Huskies don’t throw a large net when they scour the islands for talent. Recruiter Ikaika Malloe is picky. Landing Kamehameha defensive tackle Kuao Peihopa could fortify a defensive unit that is already talented — and sparked by local talent. Peihopa, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound two-way lineman, will bring a 3.4 grade-point average to the Huskies. He will graduate early from Kamehameha and will arrive in Seattle after the Polynesian Bowl in mid-January. “It’s the University of Hawaii at Seattle […]

Kamehameha OL Austyn Kauhi signs with Syracuse

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2020

On June 13, Austyn Kauhi committed to Syracuse. On Wednesday morning, the Kamehameha senior made it official and signed a letter of intent to play football for the Orange. “I feel happy and relieved that everything is done and I can just focus on Syracuse and playing football,” said Kauhi, who was initially recruited by assistant coach Blair Cavanaugh, son of Syracuse offensive line coach — and former Hawaii assistant — Mike Cavanaugh. They can expect a bit of a […]
