Two teams who have their sights set on the OIA playoffs begin their Division II seasons at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium as Pearl City and Kalani square off in a game that could mean a lot toward the end of the season with five schools (Waipahu, Waialua, Kaimuki) all finishing over .500 last season in the race for four playoff berths. Pearl City Chargers (0-1) Head coach: Robin Kami, fifth season, 23-18 2017 Chargers roster VS. Kalani Falcons (0-0) Head coach: […]

Kalani excited for rare mainland football trip

By Billy Hull on March 31, 2017

A quick scroll though the Kalani football engine tells us that the Falcons have not played a football game on the mainland since beating Earl Wooster High School in Reno, Nev., in 1974 with senior Craig Ogata starting at quarterback. Four decades later under second-year head coach Scott Melemai, the Falcons are finally going back. Kalani will play Mount Tahoma (Wash.) in Tacoma on Sept. 8. The T-Birds, who are coached by Roosevelt alum Ricky Daley, went 3-7 last year. […]

Nerdpod: Quarterbacks v3.0

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2016

NERDPOD: Quarterbacks v3.0 The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best quarterbacks in the state. This is more of a run-through than a breakdown of QB statistics for the first time since almost two months. Numbers don’t tell the whole story, of course. That’s why this is Nerdpod, not fanpod. Some amazing, eye-popping numbers this season. QBs listed below in random order for the most part. QUARTERBACKS Tua Tagovailoa, Saint Louis Measurables: 6-1, 210, […]

Nerdpod: Running backs v3.0

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2016

NERDPOD: Running backs v3.0 The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best running backs in the state. Wow. Wowowow. They come at Challen Faamatau in all kinds of ways, none of them friendly. Chisel, blast, avalanche. Whatever it takes, defenses will come at Farrington Governor #13, and he has paid the price. Yet, he never stays down for long. He gets back up and keeps answering the call. Today, we take a look at […]

Nerdpod: Receivers v4.0

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2016

NERDPOD: Receivers v4.0 Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best pass catchers in the state. The regular season has drawn its curtain across the islands, but I’ll be adding more pass catchers to this list until the playoffs and state tourney are done, and maybe past that, too. This week, five additions. Numbers are nice, but seeing how they reflect a player’s season is usually intriguing. Even players who don’t have statistics that scratch the ceiling […]

GAME NIGHT 10/14: McKinley/Kalani

By Hawaii Prep World on October 14, 2016

Seven games with major state tournament implications in most are on tap tonight on Oahu. Kalani (3-3, 3-3 OIA D-II) and McKinley (0-7, 0-6) wrap up the season tonight clashing in an OIA Division II game at Kaiser. The Falcons are the first team out of the OIA D-II playoffs despite playing some really good football this season. Kalani was one of only two teams to defeat Kaimuki in conference play and had close losses to playoff teams Waialua (16-14) […]

GAME NIGHT 10/8: Kalani/Waipahu

By Hawaii Prep World on October 8, 2016

A modest three games on the schedule today on Oahu. Waipahu (6-1, 5-1) locks up a playoff berth and a top-two seed in the OIA Division II playoffs with a win over Kalani (3-2, 3-2), which needs a win to stay in the thick of the playoff race. A scenario of five teams finishing 5-2 in the OIA D-II is still possible with a Falcons win. HISTORY: Waipahu is 9-0 all-time against the Falcons. Live updates of the 6:30 p.m. […]
