Football finds former UH LB Blaze Soares again

By Nick Abramo on September 14, 2018

Not being involved in football for eight years may be one of the best things that ever happened to Blaze Soares. Now that he’s back — as an assistant coach — he full appreciates how fortunate he is to have rekindled his love of the game. “I fell out of it and wasn’t really in love with the sport anymore,” said Soares, the former Castle and University of Hawaii linebacker, about the time after his college eligibility ended in 2009. […]

Soares making a difference as DC at Kalaheo

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2018

The Kalaheo Mustangs are starting to look like contenders. It’s not so much that their last two wins were shutouts, it’s more the way they’ve looked while doing it. There is way too much left in the season to tell for sure if Kalaheo will seriously contend for the OIA D-II title. And it’s important to remember that the Mustangs’ two wins are against McKinley and Waialua — two teams who have, much like Kalaheo, usually been near the bottom […]

Kalaheo 43, Waialua 0, final 5:18: Game over. 5:13: Isaiah Akiu makes a 23-yard catch on a pass from Lapera to push the ball to the Waialua 4. Alana scores from 4 yards out on the next play. Nicolas Sarji makes the extra-point kick. KALAHEO 43, WAIALUA 0, 2:16 left in game. 5:11: Borge makes an interception for Kalaheo, and the Mustangs are on the move. A 15-yard pass to Neufeldt and a 9-yard Addy run gets the ball to […]

Kalaheo hopes to eventually host football games

By Nick Abramo on August 30, 2018

Upgrades to the Kalaheo athletic field are ongoing, and the hope is for the school to host football games there eventually. The football team has never hosted a varsity game on campus and has been practicing off-campus the past two seasons while work has been going on. Right now, grass is coming in, and when that strengthens and the field gets the final OK, the Mustangs soccer teams will be able to jump on and practice and host games this […]

No JV football games for Kalaheo, Waialua

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2018

The most recent schedule released by the OIA shows no games scheduled for the Kalaheo and Waialua junior varsity football teams. This is something new at Kalaheo and something that happens nearly every season at Waialua. At Kalaheo, varsity coach Darrell Poole is not throwing in the towel as far as the JV team goes. “We still have a JV team that is practicing, but there are barely 15 kids,” Poole said. “That’s not enough to play games (safely). There […]

New field, bleachers for Kalaheo

By Paul Honda on November 22, 2017

More than a few passers-by have done a double-take along Mokapu Boulevard in recent months. That huge, silverish stack of metal is what has been missing for Kalaheo’s football and soccer teams all these years. Bleachers. A high, beautiful stack of seats in the year 2017. The work isn’t limited to spectator appeal, though. “The sprinkler system is in and when the roots come up, we start the process to new grass,” Kalaheo Athletic Director Mark Brilhante said. The length […]

Kalaheo suits up 20 in season finale

By Billy Hull on October 6, 2017

They started the season with 19 in uniform at Kamehameha-Maui and ended it with 20 suited up at Skippa Diaz Stadium on Friday night. The Kalaheo Mustangs have been undermanned all season, but still managed to double their win total from the previous season. Kalaheo finished 2-5 in OIA Division II play following a 49-7 loss to Kaimuki, which is headed to the playoffs for the third straight year. Junior quarterback Noa Lapera threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Justus […]
