Video: Radford at #10 Kaiser

By Paul Honda on October 22, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 (post-game interviews) I arrived at Kaiser Stadium thinking, this would be a prime opportunity for Radford, one of the most prolific offensive units in D-II history, to play its finest game. To achieve peak performance, even (or especially) against the team that was a disturbance in the force. It was Kaiser that blemished Radford’s perfect record in blowout fashion. As a fan, I wanted to see both teams at their best. Maybe it wouldn’t […]

Karratti back at states with a new team

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 21, 2013

In helping Kaiser find redemption, Cougars quarterbackKahoalii Karratti gave himself a second chance to create a more positive memory of the state tournament.

Update: Kaiser 51, Radford 3, Final

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2013

Pre-game JV game is in the third quarter. Kaiser leads Kalaheo 35-0. It’s a typical evening in Hawaii Kai. Good breeze from mauka side. Partly cloudy. Gorgeous sunset. Often enough, things change within an hour with gusts and rain. Hopefully not tonight. I want to see Radford air it out early and often. I’d like to see Kaiser get truly tested for an entire game. First quarter 8:59 – The Cougars drive on the ground and score on a 3-yard […]

Big hit sends Kaiser’s Fisher to sideline

By Nick Abramo on October 5, 2013

The thud was audible. The airborne helmet was visible. This wasn’t an ordinary football play Friday night in Pearl City. It was a jarring, first-quarter hit by 180-pound Kaiser linebacker Tommy Fisher on 130-pound Pearl City wide receiver Jacy Crail, and Crail hit the ground while his helmet rolled around. Fisher’s hit appeared to be clean without an intent to injure, but the Cougars were flagged 15 yards for what was described as illegal contact. Fisher was ejected and will […]

Pupule’s ballot: Voters catching up to Pupule

By Paul Honda on September 24, 2013

Mililani is moving up in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 poll, which means I’m ahead of the curve or just prophetic. Or just lucky. After all, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Polls, of course, are not about predictions. Mililani simply looked to me like the second-best team in the state for some time — since Kamehameha’s loss to Punahou, to be precise. Didn’t really seem that way, though, while the Trojans were down 21-7 to Campbell at […]

Miano credits Ikei with Kaiser’s fitness

By Nick Abramo on September 22, 2013

Coach Rich Miano and his Kaiser football team (5-1, 5-0) are gunning for the OIA White title and looking at possibly making some noise in the state tournament. Miano is quick to point out how his players are in tip-top condition, and he doesn’t take the credit for it. “We have the best strength coach in Hawaii in Chad Ikei,” Miano said. “What he does is phenomenal. He spends more time with the the football players than I do. He’s a Kaiser alum […]

Pupule’s ballot: Guess who at No. 2

By Paul Honda on September 19, 2013

Still some video to edit, but I’m squeezing this in. For the first time in weeks, we have virtually no debate about who is No. 1 in the islands. But I can’t help wondering just a bit about how good Mililani really is. They gave Punahou a serious battle in Week 2, a closer game than Kamehameha gave the Buffanblu. Even Lahainaluna, despite its lack of strength of schedule, has been impressive defensively. A dominant rushing attack. A dominant defense. […]
