Kahuku impressive in first on-field action since 2019

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2021

Up front, it is all business for Kahuku. Coming into a scrimmage with No. 1-ranked Kamehameha, two offensive linemen went down with injuries. Next man up. Kahuku scored five touchdowns in five series during the modified scrimmage, mixing rollouts and two-back, shotgun power runs in a display of balance. Kamehameha played reserves from start to finish. The Warriors’ bye week was an opportunity to get some action for both those second- and third-stringers, while the visiting Red Raiders enjoyed their […]

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2021

That Kahuku football schedule is getting better by the day. The Red Raiders will battle Punahou on Nov. 20, in addition to an Oct. 9 matchup with Kamehameha. The date, according to Punahou coach Nate Kia, is “reserved.” Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho does not have any remaining bye weekends for his team, but the alternative of fewer games is not on his wish list. “Hopefully, everyone stays healthy and the game can happen,” Carvalho said. After nearly two years without […]

Kahuku DC Sola Soliai recalls excellent adventures with late Matt Faga

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2021

The first time Sola Soliai met Matt Faga, it was two alpha dogs sizing each other up. Soliai was an assistant at Kaimuki back in 2007. Kaimuki was in the process of searching for an additional defensive line coach. “Practice starts. We’re running a drill with the D-line. Here comes this huge guy from the parking lot wearing a red shirt. I’m telling the D-line something, Matt walks on the field with his mad dog face, and I’m who the […]

Tausili Akana has played his cards well. More than well. Each move by the junior from Hauula has been golden. Midas touch golden. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound linebacker capped a busy summer with offers from three SEC football programs: Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn. It was a cascading effect, with Georgia offer on July 26, Tennessee one day later, and Auburn a day after that. Those followed an official offer by Clemson on July 17. In all, the former Kamehameha and Wasatch […]

Former Kaimuki Bulldog recalls transformation from player to coach under late Matt Faga

By Paul Honda on August 8, 2021

It took no time for Matt Faga to walk from the highest level of the game back to his roots. Faga died on Saturday at 39, a victim of COVID-19 complications. The football community, from Kaimuki to Kaiser to Kahuku, remains in disbelief. He was an assistant coach at Kahuku under head coach Sterling Carvalho and defensive coordinator Sola Soliai, mentoring and guiding young players with the Rebel Squad in the offseason. The former Kaimuki and Hawaii standout defensive tackle […]

With an offer from Oklahoma, Tausili Akana is in rarefied territory. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound outside linebacker now has 30 scholarship offers before his junior year begins. That may be a record for a Hawaii high school scholar-athlete. “Oklahoma is a very reputable school. They’re known for football and play in a very tough conference,” Akana said. “It’s a Nike Jumpman sponsored school. I like the coaching staff and what they do on defense.” Assistant coach Jamar Cain was the primary […]
