Four local teams nationally ranked

By Paul Honda on March 10, 2011

Baseball and softball are in the swing of things, so to speak. Boys volleyball hasn’t started regular-season play yet, but local teams are already making a big impression on the national front. Kamehameha, Punahou, ‘Iolani and Hawaii Baptist are in the ESPN Rise Fab 50 rankings. Kamehameha is ranked No. 6 nationally. Punahou, last year’s No. 1 squad, is ninth, followed by No. 20 ‘Iolani and No. 31 HBA. Seabury Hall is on the cusp of the poll. Paul Honda, […]

‘Iolani Classic girls tourney: Semifinals

By Jerry Campany on December 10, 2010

Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) and Konawaena had dreams of reaching the ‘Iolani Classic finals, but both teams were foiled by nationally-ranked powerhouses tonight. Brea Olinda (Calif.), ranked No. 3 in the USA Today Super 25, was too balanced and big in a 69-45 runaway win over Konawaena, the top-ranked team in Hawaii. Lia Galdeira was sometimes spectacular in a 24-point performance. Memphis Central, No. 8 nationally, was clutch down the stretch in a 55-52 win over Archbishop Mitty. Frankly, I think […]

Francis Fletcher memorial

By Jerry Campany on November 26, 2010

The only thing bigger than 6-foot-7 Francis Fletcher was his heart. Oh, there were the accolades. All-State championship player. Undersized, but highly effective college pivot. Pro baller. Superb recruiter. But what former teammates and friends remembered most about Fletcher were memories not so well-known outside his basketball family. The practical jokes. Always a friend in times of need. Equally adept at returning an elbow or a hug, depending on the situation. The basketball community at Maryknoll, Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific […]
