By Jerry Campany on June 5, 2015

BJ Hosaka has outgrown his fish bowl. He is the fifth athlete from the school to be so honored, joining former teammate Michael Fisher, Sarah Palmer, Lauren Ho and Matt Stevens. Hosaka owned […]

Hall pass: Gabbie Ewing

By Jerry Campany on June 4, 2015

It’s hard to boil Gabbie Ewing‘s contribution to Hawaii Prep athletics by mere numbers. As a soccer player, she controls the middle and isn’t asked to put up obscene goal totals like Leo Klink and Sonest Furtado did. On the volleyball court, she wasn’t the type of player to rise above the net and drop bombs like Tiyana Hallums or McKenna Granato until she had to be. But the 16 member Hall of Honor committee had no problem judging intangibles […]

Hall pass: Kamuela Borden

By Jerry Campany on June 3, 2015

Perhaps the most impressive part of Iolani’s football dynasty is that the Raiders have seemed to have done it without the types of elite athletes who are inducted into the HHSAA Hall of Honor each year. Iolani has put five football players in the Hall of Honor in its dynastic run when it won seven of eight Division II state titles since 2007, but Kamuela Borden is the first to break through since 2010. Most of those made their greatest […]

Work continues on at least six football and/or track and field facilities around the OIA. A small sampling of what to expect, according to an OIA spokesman, is listed below. >> Radford: The track around the football field is being redone and it’s possible the work will be finished halfway through upcoming football season. Until it’s completed, the Rams will play football games away from home. >> Moanalua: A new field has been put in and will be used for […]

Akana is ready for St. Francis’ next chapter

By Nick Abramo on June 2, 2015

New St. Francis football coach Kip Akana is taking up where Mike Ulufale left off. Three years ago, the Saints’ varsity football program didn’t exist. Ulufale got them through the infancy against notoriously powerful ILH teams in two winless seasons. There is more than a glimmer of hope for the future. Guiding St. Francis’ intermediate football team, Akana went 13-7 the past three seasons (13-1 in the last two), and many of the varsity players going into the 2015 season […]
