Castle’s Lewis recovering from concussion

By Nick Abramo on August 18, 2015

Castle football player Keola Lewis, who was taken to a hospital on a stretcher during Saturday’s game against Campbell at Aloha Stadium, is recovering from a concussion and neck strain, according to Knights coach Nelson Maeda. “Good news,” Maeda texted Hawaii Prep World. “Not to trivialize it, but (the injury) looked worse than what was (eventually) diagnosed.” Lewis, a 5-foot-6, 130-pound junior slotback and defensive back, was hurt on a Campbell kickoff return and was attended to on the field […]

Saturday football updates

By Tiff Wells on August 8, 2015

As always, we begin with a few notes culled from the pages of history: >> Pac-Five and Kalani have never met. The Wolfpack have lost six straight games and Kalani has lost three straight. >> Iolani has not lost a season opener since 2003, when it fell to McKinley. That’s 12 in a row. The Raiders and Kamehameha-Maui have met only once before, in 2008 when Iolani thrashed the visitors 39-0 to open the season. Iolani enters the game with […]

LIVE BLOG: OIA banquet

By Nick Abramo on June 17, 2015

Here at the Ala Moana Hotel ballroom for the Oahu Interscholastic Association school-year end banquet. Saw a lot of OIA VIPs already — Sam Delos Reyes, the athletic director at Campbell, a school which manufactured more than a few league championships in 2014-15 is taking registrations at the front door. Farrington AD Harold Tanaka stepped up to the podium before dinner, and, after introducing himself as “Kaiser AD Rodney Iwasaki,” he told the audience that if they had any complaints about […]

ESPN’s Neil Everett surprises Hall of Honor

By Jerry Campany on June 8, 2015

The 33rd annual Hall of Honor banquet felt a lot like a family reunion. Neil Everett, last year’s speaker, made an appearance via video to surprise Hawaii News Now’s Fran Weems, this year’s featured speaker. Weems had been inducted a decade before. But for all those two professionals said, the most memorable words were spoken by Kamehameha’s Sarah Lau on behalf of all of the inductees, borrowed from a Navy Seal: “Make your bed.” Here are Sunday night’s 12 […]

Hall pass: Kanoa Kaleoaloha

By Jerry Campany on June 6, 2015

This might be the golden age of high school swimming. Kanoa Kaleoaloha will be the fifth swimmer in the last three years inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom on June 7. He will be inducted with Mid-Pacific’s Lena Hayakawa, the second straight year multiple swimmers have been inducted. Last year, Kamehameha teammate Ryan Stack and Punahou’s Jasmine Mau joined the elite club. Kaleoaloha was Stack’s running mate the last three years, […]

Hall pass: Ian Kahaloa

By Jerry Campany on June 5, 2015

Ian Kahaloa has raised the bar for baseball players in Hawaii. A year after Jordan Yamamoto of Saint Louis and Kodi Medeiros of Waiakea thrilled scouts and fans at the state baseball tournament, Kahaloa has earned something that neither of the professional pitchers has. Kahaloa will be inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor on June 7 at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom. He will be the first baseball player inducted since 2011 when Shea Shimabukuro got in. […]
