ILH boys soccer teams off to flying start

By Nick Abramo on January 14, 2016

At this point, Interscholasatic League of Honolulu boys soccer looks like a race between three undefeated teams. Punahou has taken a small lead with a 4-0 record, and the Buffanblu are followed in the standings by ‘Iolani and Mid-Pacific, both at 3-0-1. Kamehameha, at 2-2, is also in the mix for the championship and the league’s two spots in the state tournament. Nothing is a given and the league’s other teams —— Saint Louis, Damien and Pac-Five — can all […]

LIVE BLOG: #2 Kaiser 72, Farrington 58, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

A matchup of OIA East teams in this consolation game at the ‘Iolani Classic. On paper, it might not look extremely interesting, but this is a preview of what they’ll do (or not do) come regular season. Kaiser is coming off a 39-38 loss to a tough Mid-Pacific squad. At the time, Kaiser was ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10. (I haven’t taken a look at the new rankings that were released this morning.) Farrington? They upset then-No. […]

FIRST QUARTER The Trailblazers can do no wrong so far. Made all three shots, 3-for-3 at the […]

UPDATE: Fairfax 47, ‘Iolani 43, F

By Paul Honda on December 19, 2015

This matchup pits CIF powerhouse Fairfax (Calif.) and Hawaii’s No. 1-ranked team, host ‘Iolani. Raiders getting some good looks offensively, but not capitalizing. First quarter ends with the Lions up 12-7. SECOND QUARTER Jamal Hartwell answers an ‘Iolani 3 with a jumper from the foul line. FAX time out, up 18-10 with 4:26 to go. FAX not shooting well, but hustling for offensive boards. More than that, their on-ball defense and length is a major factor. The Raiders picked up […]

No. 9 is fine with the Lancers Nine

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2015

A flawless 7-0 in preseason play, including wins over D-I Kailua and Roosevelt. An 0-2 start in ILH Division I action. That’s life for the Rocky Balboa of girls basketball programs, Sacred Hearts, and its nine-player roster. The Lancers have been superb, even with losses to Kamehameha and Punahou — both on the road — as Jessica Hanashiro (16 points against Kamehameha) and Pakalana Kam (12 against Punahou) have helped to lead the charge. Ryan Hogue’s mission, aside from operating […]

ILH football first team all-stars, 1920-present

By Jerry Campany on November 23, 2015

Wayne Taulapapa has always been more about winning as a team than as an individual. But this season, for the first time in his career, the Buffanblu turned in their pads before turning the calendar to November so there is not much left other than individual awards. Taulapapa got a big one on Monday night, being named to the ILH first team for the third year in a row. He wasn’t the offensive MVP, but he was recognized for what […]

More than 40 high school seniors, including volleyball standouts like ‘Iolani’s Bailey Choy and golf state champion Mariel Galdiano, signed with their respective colleges this morning. Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance hosted the letter-of-intent signing ceremony at the Elks Lodge of Honolulu, located on the shore of Waikiki. Choy, who sparked ‘Iolani to the ILH girls volleyball championship this fall, signed with the University of Utah. She was one of 13 volleyball players who signed at the event. “I bought it […]
