HAWAII GROWN: UCF’s Dillon Gabriel starts, dazzles in win over Stanford

By Billy Hull on September 14, 2019

UCF coach Josh Heupel has been tight-lipped about who would be his starting quarterback in each of the Knights’ last two games. True freshman Dillon Gabriel is doing his best to make that choice obvious. The reigning Honolulu Star-Advertiser offensive player of the year out of Mililani is putting a stranglehold on that starting job after leading the Knights to a 45-27 win over Stanford on Saturday that wasn’t as close as the final score indicates. The left-handed gunslinger, who […]

By Billy Hull on September 7, 2019

Central Florida true freshman Dillon Gabriel got the start in tonight’s 48-14 win over Florida Atlantic. And it was a bit of a surprise. UCF coach Josh Heupel told reporters Thursday, “I don’t see anything different here at this point,” regarding his QB situation. Brandon Wimbush started the opener last week against Florida A&M with Gabriel also seeing action. Instead, it was Gabriel, the 2018 Mililani alumnus and Hawaii’s all-time career passing record holder who trotted out on the field […]

HAWAII GROWN: UCF’s Dillon Gabriel to play in season opener

By Billy Hull on August 22, 2019

The news wasn’t exactly what Dillon Gabriel hoped for, but it wasn’t bad either. Locked in a three-way battle for the starting quarterback job as a true freshman at UCF, Gabriel, who signed with the Knights just nine months ago, will at least see the field in the Knights’ season opener next Thursday against Florida A&M. UCF coach Josh Heupel announced today that Brandon Wimbush, a transfer from Notre Dame, will get the start against the Rattlers but that Gabriel […]
