ILH girls tip off hoops season tonight

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2011

Can it be here already? It sure can. Blink, hesitate or fall behind, and the ‘Iolani Raiders will be 94 feet upcourt hitting another 3 or layup. That’s the deal for the rest of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, which will have to deal with a speedy ‘Iolani squad that returns most of its rotation from a year ago. Defending league champion Punahou will have something to say about that. So will contenders Kamehameha and Mid-Pacific. Punahou is in its […]

Letter-of-intent signing day (extended version)

By Jerry Campany on November 17, 2011

(Here’s the letter-of-intent story in its entirety. We had a little bit of a space limitation in the print edition today.) Trusty purple pen in hand, Ali‘itasi Docktor was a jumble of nerves when the early signing period began on Nov. 9. Docktor, an all-state, power-hitting third baseman at Mid-Pacific, never got this tense at the plate. “I was shaking,” Docktor admitted. Yesterday, Docktor, teammate Keiki Carlos and dozens of other student-athletes were in the spotlight at the letter-of-intent signing […]

As for the conference, it’s a light year in terms of heavy topics, but there was […]

Konawaena accepted Punahou’s challenge (extended)

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2011

. (Here’s the complete, extended version of today’s follow-up story on Konawaena’s girls basketball championship victory.) Foul trouble. Illness. Punahou. The road back to the state championship was a path of roundball destruction by the Konawaena Wildcats. At the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships, the onslaught of wipeouts continued. A 25-point win over Kaiser. A 31-point rout of ‘Iolani. Just a continuation, apparently, of a season when the ‘Cats outscored opponents by more than 43 points per […]
