Two games in, the Lady Spartans of Maryknoll are still alive in the title hunt. Serenity Moananu scored 12 of her team-high 18 points in the third quarter as Maryknoll rallied past Yucaipa (Calif.) 64-57 on Friday at the Glendora tournament. The problem with any streak is that it comes to an end eventually. That isn’t necessarily bad, of course, even if it was a win streak that has been snapped. Kamehameha got its revenge and Waiakea is making noise. The Kamehameha Warriors avenged an early loss to Konawaena by winning decisively, 58-45, on Saturday at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. Coach Pua Straight‘s Warriors moved up a spot to No. 2, switching places with the BIIF powerhouse Wildcats. Brooke Demetre arrived at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic with a well-earned reputation as a superb long-range stroke. The Mater Dei junior left an impression with much more. Demetre closed out the Classic with nine points and eight assists in a 74-69 championship win over St. Mary’s on Saturday. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player, averaging 10 points per game and using her 6-foot-3 frame to protect the rim defensively.
