Division II providing plenty of intrigue in girls basketball

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2020

The big dance is exactly two weeks away, so here’s a look at how it is shaping up in a wide open Division II. It is particularly intriguing — and saddening — for fans who enjoy watching both D-II and D-I state tournaments. It’ll be fun for Big Islanders since the D-II dance will be at iconic Afook-Chinen Hilo Civic Auditorium. The site is similar to McCabe Gymnasium, home of Saint Louis and Chaminade basketball, but Hilo Civic has “end […]

By Billy Hull on January 20, 2020

Defending OIA champion Kahuku, which has won 23 consecutive games in the regular season, is the No. 1 seed in the playoffs that begin Wednesday at four different sites. The Red Raiders (11-0) have a bye into the quarterfinals on Thursday when they host the winner between West No. 4 Leilehua and East No. 5 Kaiser. The Cougars are the only team the Red Raiders failed to beat by at least 20 points in the regular season, winning by 19 […]

By Paul Honda on January 20, 2020

There wasn’t a whole lot on the line for the Kamehameha Warriors on Monday night. Nothing but pride. The visiting Warriors got a clutch 3-point shot from Haley Masaki with 24 seconds left to break a 46-all tie as No. 5 Kamehameha edged No. 6 Punahou 51-46 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. “Coach (Pua Straight) just told us to run our play and let our offense come to us,” Masaki said. “When we trust each other, a lot opens up.” It was […]

By Paul Honda on January 14, 2020

Senior night was the right night for No. 4 Maryknoll, which stunned No. 1 ‘Iolani 55-51 at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium on Tuesday. ‘Iolani had not lost an ILH game since Dec. 7, 2018, a 49-45 loss at home against Kamehameha. Including last season’s playoffs, the Raiders had won 16 league games in a row. Serenity Moananu poured in 16 points, Aloha Akaka added nine and the Spartans (13-5, 5-4 ILH) went deep on their bench en route to the […]

Lady Lunas return to Top 10 as sophomore Taylor Eldredge scorches nets

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2020

It is too early to declare anything — the exception being the dominance of defending state champion ‘Iolani — in girls basketball this season, though the Lahainaluna Lunas are inching toward identity. Two wins in the past week have vaulted the proud Lunas back into the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. On Wednesday, the 10th-ranked Lunas hit Honoapi‘ilani Highway, then trekked uphill on Kula Highway to complete the 33-mile journey to King Kekaulike. They swamped Na Alii 66-36 and followed […]
