Girls Basketball: Lahainaluna wins opener

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2010

I caught some basketball last night at the Maroon and White Classic, Farrington’s annual girls basketball tourney. By the time I got there, Mid-Pacific had already beaten Farrington and ‘Iolani had outraced Kahuku. Lahainaluna held on to edge Kamehameha 43-40. The defending state champs played without returning player of the year Maiki Viela (back), who is at “75 percent,” according to coach Todd Rickard. She might get some playing time next week when the Lady Lunas travel to the Konawaena […]

Chun: ‘D-III will happen one day’

By Paul Honda on June 13, 2010

Fiscal responsibility is utmost in Chris Chun’s mind. The attorney-turned-executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association made it through the busy spring season and this week’s athletic directors conference with renewed energy. He’s got little time to digest the proposals that passed the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference before they go up for vote before the HHSAA’s executive board on Monday morning. Without the HHSAA’s approval, no HIADA proposal is enacted. It’s happened often times before: three […]

MIL, BIIF spoke loud and clear

By Paul Honda on June 13, 2010

The groundswell had been building, all right. So had the ammunition. The Maui Interscholastic League and Big Island Interscholastic Federation were outnumbered, but not outgunned when discussion on the open floor ensued on Friday, the final day of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference. The cool air-conditioning of the ballroom at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Hotel belied the intensity of thoughts and exchange on a few issues. The load wasn’t large; several battles offered by the neighbor islands were […]

Lady Luna becomes a Hoosier

By Jerry Campany on May 22, 2010

More on Milika Taufa, who helped lead Lahainaluna to the girls basketball state championship this year. > > > Milika Taufa is going to be a Hoosier. The Lahainaluna center, a Star-Bulletin Girls Basketball All-State Fab 15 selection, signed with Indiana last week after visiting the campus. “She sent out her profile (after the season) and I got 20-something calls in one day,” Lady Lunas coach Todd Rickard said. The 5-foot-11 senior also visited Louisiana Tech. Iowa and Northwestern were […]

More on girls hoops POY Maiki Viela

By Jerry Campany on April 18, 2010

. When Jamm Aquino shot the photo of Star-Bulletin Girls Basketball Player of the Year Maiki Viela, she had no idea — and neither did we — if she would get the honor. The photo was taken the night Lahainaluna won its first state championship, and with the Lady Lunas set to return home early the next day, we played it safe and got posed shots of potential POYs, including Viela. So, when we reached her on Saturday night to […]
