Punahou girls hoops: 8-0

By Paul Honda on December 14, 2010

This morning’s Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 lists Punahou at No. 2 with a 7-1 record. WRONG! The Buffanblu are 8-0. I had the win-loss record wrong a couple of weeks ago, but corrected it. But this week (today) we had an error on our desk and bungled it again. My apologies to the team. 2. ‘Iolani Classic girls tourney: Semifinals

By Jerry Campany on December 10, 2010

Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) and Konawaena had dreams of reaching the ‘Iolani Classic finals, but both teams were foiled by nationally-ranked powerhouses tonight. Brea Olinda (Calif.), ranked No. 3 in the USA Today Super 25, was too balanced and big in a 69-45 runaway win over Konawaena, the top-ranked team in Hawaii. Lia Galdeira was sometimes spectacular in a 24-point performance. Memphis Central, No. 8 nationally, was clutch down the stretch in a 55-52 win over Archbishop Mitty. Frankly, I think […]

Heckling, bad-apple parents spoil it for kids

By Jerry Campany on December 8, 2010

To the handful of Moanalua “fans” who heckled an injured Roosevelt player Tuesday night … Auwe! To the cynical woman sitting midway up the bleachers in the midcourt area: To act all irritated because a kid was seriously in pain with leg cramps is fine … but to start complaining that he’s “faking” it? Especially after he went down a second time? Naturally, a Roosevelt fan — a mom or auntie — sitting nearby stood up and rebuked her. Then […]

Kaiser pulls away from Moanalua (full length)

By Paul Honda on November 28, 2010

. (Here’s the extended version of yesterday morning’s game between Kaiser and Moanalua.) Simon Bitanga is always a stickler for basics. That’s why, even with a 40-36 road win over Moanalua, the second-year Kaiser head coach was not entirely impressed with his Cougars squad. “We moved the ball pretty good on offense. We got the shots, but we’re still not finishing,” Bitanga said. “Defensively, we stepped it up with our big lineup, but on the offensive side, we missed some […]
