Kahuku vs. OIA: Legal Eagles at work

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2010

It’s Monday morning, I’ve had my oatmeal and banana, and Kahuku’s legal team is filing suit against the OIA, HHSAA and the DOE state superintendent in court. It’s come to this. On one hand, attorney Eric Seitz has said clearly that the intent is mainly to get all parties to sit down and discuss this delicate, complex matter. On the other, the state football tournament is set to begin on Friday and the gears are in motion. Planet tickets. Hotel […]

Mililani seeded No. 1, Saint Louis No. 2

By Paul Honda on November 6, 2010

(Click on brackets for larger size) The Division I bracket for the state tournament didn’t change despite the ouster of No. 1-ranked Kahuku. The OIA champion, Mililani, is seeded first and will have a first-round bye. Saint Louis is the second seed behind Mililani, an oddity considering the Crusaders’ season-long lock at No. 2 in the Top 10 behind Kahuku. Saint Louis will also have a bye before facing Baldwin, Leilehua or Waianae. Oddly enough, tonight’s Leilehua-Waianae winner will have […]

Still in Kahuku/Laie

By Jerry Campany on November 5, 2010

LAIE — When I left home this morning, I half-expected an OIA Red championship football game by night. I was more than half wrong. By the time the OIA ruled, as expected, really, that the use of an ineligible player would end Kahuku’s perfect season, I was on my way to the North Shore. Get some reactions, the Boss said. So I went. It was strange, driving through the Windward rain to Kahuku. For the first time, I was on […]

Kahuku’s postseason in limbo?

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2010

(Note: I wrote this last night for today’s print edition, but we didn’t run it. Here it is now, though.) Principals and members of the Oahu Interscholastic Association’s sanctioning committee met for three hours last night to probe into a rumor that two Kahuku football players were ineligible this season. Kahuku (10-0), the top-ranked team in the state, is set to play Mililani for the league title tonight. However, principals will meet again this morning (11 a.m.) to continue discussion. […]

Complete Honor Roll (Nov. 2)

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2010

Here’s the complete Honor Roll, which was cut significantly for the print edition on Tuesday. Athlete of the Week Boys Margarito Martinez, Leilehua cross country: The senior claimed his second state boys crown in a row with a time of 15 minutes, 56 seconds in the Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA Girls Cross Country State Championship at Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. Girls Dakota Grossman, Seabury Hall cross country: The freshman pulled away to win the Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA Girls Cross Country State […]

Destination Pukalani: Dolphins everywhere

By Jerry Campany on October 27, 2010

KAHULUI — I’ve gotten over the fact that I won’t be able to see the Molokai Farmers (and videotape their matches) this week at the HHSAA Division II Girls Volleyball State Championships on Oahu. Nope, time to move forward. The journey from Honolulu to Upcountry Maui has begun. The D-I state tourney begins in a few hours and I’ve landed in Kahului. “No reason to be overly concerned,” the pilot said after announcing that there would be some typical turbulence […]

Video: Post-game, Mililani WR Hassan Richardson

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2010

(Note, Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, 9:25 a.m.: I reloaded the video after fixing a typo — “yards” didn’t fit into the stat line the first time.) Mililani wide receiver Hassan Richardson chats after the Trojans’ 21-14 win over Farrington in the OIA Red quarterfinals. VIDEO: Post-game, Mililani WR Hassan Richardson Paul Honda, Star-Advertiser
