Choy commits to Babers, EIU (extended)

By Paul Honda on January 25, 2012

(Here’s the long version of this morning’s story on Kamehameha safety Pono Choy, who committed to Eastern Illinois over the weekend. The print version is right here.)   This isn’t a typical new year in the life of Pono Choy. It’s not the same for Dino Babers, either. Choy, a senior safety at Kamehameha, was under the college recruiting radar until Babers called after last season. As of this weekend, the standout defender gave an oral commitment to Eastern Illinois, where […]

More on new Pearl City football coach David Hallums

By Paul Honda on January 3, 2012

(Here’s the full length of today’s story on David Hallums, the new football coach at Pearl City.) In the public eye, David Hallums wore green on the basketball court. At heart, he bleeds purple, which is one reason why Pearl City hired the former University of Hawaii hoopster as its new football head coach yesterday. “There’s a lot of school pride and I’m definitely excited. But I’m humbled, very humbled,” Hallums said yesterday afternoon. “I talked with my brother, Kalani, […]

About the HUB game

By Paul Honda on December 3, 2011

More often than not, I enjoy the week leading up to the HUB Goodwill Senior Bowl more than the actual game. Let’s face it, we’ve seen our share of blowouts. What can these coaches and players do with just one week — basically three practices — to prepare? I know time is a factor, with lots of winter sports already in season. But I truly believe there’s one aspect of the annual event that can be improved drastically, and it […]

HUB Football Classic nears

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2011

(Here’s the longer version of today’s notebook item on this Friday’s game.) Clint Onigama wouldn’t mind having a prolific passing quarterback on his side of the field when the HUB Goodwill Senior Classic kicks off on Friday at Aloha Stadium. He’ll have a good view of that kind of passer, but Kenan Sadanaga will play for the other team, the West All-Stars. Onigama has three steady seniors at the position, but none had the career numbers of Sadanaga, who led […]

Kahuku-Punahou Update: Kahuku 30-24, final

By Jerry Campany on November 25, 2011

10:48 p.m. I went down to the field to prepare for the final few minutes, and a lot happened. Mahonilai Fakatou burst through for a 30-yard touchdown to give Kahuku a seemingly safe 30-17 lead. Then Punahou got a big kickoff return by Kotoni Sekona, and Steven Lakalaka scored again on a 6-yard pass to bring his team within 30-24 with 24 seconds left. Kahuku then recovered the on-side kick to seal the win. 9:26 p.m. Steven Lakalaka pulls down an […]

‘Iolani-Waipahu Update: Raiders 34-0, final

By Jerry Campany on November 25, 2011

7:12 p.m. Kody Mento’s 8-yard burst with 4:59 left  closes out the scoring for the Raiders in a 34-0 win. This is their fifth D-II championship in a row, six total. All under Coach Wendell Look. 5:39 p.m. 33-yard field goal by Jordan Lee gives ‘Iolani a 27-0 lead with 6:32 left in the third quarter. 5:19 p.m. Halftime, ‘Iolani up 24-0 and they’re running at will much of the time, which surprises me. Waipahu offense can’t get a consistent […]

Preview: Kahuku-Punahou bonus

By Paul Honda on November 25, 2011

(Here’s a little more on tonight’s Division I title showdown between Kahuku and Punahou in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships. The preview is in today’s edition of the Star-Advertiser.) This matchup — a rematch of the 2005 title game won by Kahuku — offers vast opportunity for innovation. That’s where Punahou offensive coordinator Darryl Kan excels. Unlike Kahuku, which committed to a ground-and-pound game decades ago, Kan and the Buffanblu have stressed run blocking out of the pistol […]
