Kahuku-Punahou Update: Kahuku 30-24, final

10:48 p.m. I went down to the field to prepare for the final few minutes, and a lot happened. Mahonilai Fakatou burst through for a 30-yard touchdown to give Kahuku a seemingly safe 30-17 lead. Then Punahou got a big kickoff return by Kotoni Sekona, and Steven Lakalaka scored again on a 6-yard pass to bring his team within 30-24 with 24 seconds left. Kahuku then recovered the on-side kick to seal the win.

9:26 p.m. Steven Lakalaka pulls down an alley-oop toss from Larry Tuileta for a 24-yard touchdown. Punahou is within 24-17 with 6:57 left.

9:15 p.m. Kahuku drives to the Punahou 14, but Livai’s pass into the end zone is deflected by Quincy Marting off his foot and chest, then intercepted by Zach Hernandez for a touchback.


9:09 p.m. Third quarter ends, Kahuku leads 24-10.

9:08 p.m. Punahou stops Kahuku on downs at the Buffanblu 22-yard line, but Steven Lakalaka fumbles and the Red Raiders recover at the Punahou 22 with 1:16 left in the third.

9 p.m. Kaimi Fairbairn’s 25-yard field goal cuts it to 24-10 with 3:55 left in the third quarter.

8:24 p.m. Punahou’s Logan Hanohano recovers an Aofaga Wily fumble in the end zone. Kahuku’s lead is now 24-7, 1:17 to go in the half.


8:05 p.m. Livai to Mekeli Fiso with a perfect lead to the corner in 1-on-1 coverage for a 16-yard touchdown. Kahuku leads 24-0 with 5:52 left in the half.

7:57 p.m. Viliami “Lasi” Livai with a 23-yard touchdown pass to fullback Mahonilai Fakatou gives Kahuku a 17-0 lead with 9:55 to go in the first half.

7:42 p.m. Aofaga Wily’s 5-yard run off the right side gives Kahuku a 10-0 lead with 3:26 to go in the first quarter.


7:28 p.m. Kekahu Aluli’s 38-yard field goal is perfect, Kahuku leads 3-0 with 6:00 to go in the first quarter.
