Adding Machine 101: Week 5, QBs

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2012

We’re roughly at the midpoint of the high school football season. Most teams have two, maybe three nonconference (preseason) games. Then seven or eight regular-season games. Maybe a few playoff games. State tourney. For a few teams, it’s a going to be a 10-game season. Maybe 11. This isn’t halfway for them. But normally, as we saw last year with Farrington running back Tyler Taumua, the latter half of the season is when the constant pounding takes a toll on […]

Weekend preview (extended)

By Paul Honda on September 7, 2012

(Here’s the longer version of the preview story from this morning’s Star-Advertiser.)  The advent of the newfangled forward pass always had its share of critics. That’s right, there once was a time when most coaches gladly tormented their new-age colleagues for trusting such a thing. Put the ball into the air where wind and rain can foil a season of hopes? Even the iconic Dick Tomey — yes, the then-UH football coach who commanded a statewide audience on Sunday afternoons […]

Adding Machine 101: Week 4, REC

By Paul Honda on September 6, 2012

Here’s a summary of top receivers, though I have to say this: receiving statistics are disappointing so far this season. After four weeks, I expected much more from receivers. Sure, it’s been a down cycle for all high school sports locally for a few years, but with so many programs employing passing attacks, I really expected more coming into the season. I thought we’d have more players with substantial reception numbers, not necessarily yardage. It’s one of the byproducts of […]

Adding Machine 101: Week 4, RBs

By Paul Honda on September 5, 2012

Here’s a look at the running backs, statistics of some, not all, up to week 4. This is in no particular order. Abraham Silva, Farrington: It would seem like a fairy tale, Amo’s sudden rise to prominence, if not for this — fans and coaches alike saw flashes of brilliance from him last year as a backup running back. With a 10-carry, 176-yard, three-touchdown performance against Kaimuki, Silva is now at 68-648-10 after four games. That’s 162 yards per game […]

Adding Machine 101: Week 4, QBs

By Paul Honda on September 5, 2012

Here’s a look at the numbers I crunched Monday night, Tuesday morning/afternoon and this morning. I don’t have stats on every starter at a “skill position,” but I’ll try with each new week. Last week, it was strictly QBs. This list, again, is QBs, and I’ll also have lists for RBs and receivers soon. No particular order, by the way. QUARTERBACKS Reece Foy, ‘Iolani: So he’s human after all. Three weeks into the season, the senior had a preposterously pleasing […]
