By Paul Honda on September 26, 2012

Week 7 is upon us. Here’s a look at individual numbers through the first six weeks. After all, not all stats are created equally. (Players listed in no particular order.) QUARTERBACKS Kahoali‘i Karratti, Konawaena 81-for-147 (.551) 1,709 yards 26 TD 3 INT Yards per attempt: 11.62 Passer rating: 207.04 The skinny: His passer rating is second in the state, but it’s tough to gauge his performance when the BIIF has some of the smallest programs in the islands. He’s sat […]

Catching that ‘Ahi

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2012

Word is getting around about Kaiser’s rugby/football dynamo, Fitou Fisiiahi. Utah and Oregon State have made scholarship offers to the 6-foot-2, 240-pound junior, who is playing on an injured foot that may require surgery after the season. Yet, his stunning acceleration and penchant for explosive plays as a linebacker and running back are matched by few. Couple that with his success in the classroom — a 3.4 grade-point average and college-qualifying test scores — and he’s becoming a magnet for […]

Kohala forfeits remaining games

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2012

(Extended version of this morning’s piece in the prep notebook.) After an 0-4 start that included a season-opening forfeit loss, the Kohala Cowboys are done for the year. The football team, with six games remaining on the schedule, will forfeit the rest of the season. A player, junior lineman Keanu Kainoa, confirmed the bad news for Kohala. Injuries, ineligible players and plain-old quitting took a toll on the team, Kainoa said. There’s no word yet whether Kohala will attempt to […]

Radford-Kalani update (final)

By Paul Honda on September 21, 2012

11:22 p.m. — The Rams got a rock-solid defensive performance tonight, a lot of bending, no breaking against the Falcons and their dangerous four-wide attack. Radford won 30-0 with a quick, uptempo no-huddle offense — a lot quicker than anything I’d seen all season. Kalani tried to go with a similar tempo, but Radford’s pass rush was brutally effective. Mana Kikiva, a real beast for Radford’s swarming defense, had three of his team’s six sacks. They hurried Noah Brum into […]

Kamehameha-‘Iolani: Wild and bizarre

By Paul Honda on September 21, 2012

The Kamehameha Warriors chased Reece Foy on Thursday night in a remarkable 42-34 win over ‘Iolani. They chased and chased and chased. Once in awhile, they got him. Three sacks of the highly elusive scrambler. But Foy, like many other ‘Iolani quarterbacks before him, never gave up. That’s why, down 35-21 in the second half, the Raiders never conceded. That’s why, with the ball at the Kamehameha 38-yard line and 52 seconds to play, it wasn’t out of the […]

3 days of football (updated Sat 11:15 pm)

By Paul Honda on September 21, 2012

Saturday Well, I knew McKinley’s defense would hang tough against Moanalua as long as it could. The Tigers made Farrington and Kahuku earn rushing yardage the hard way when they met. Moanalua? 100 rushing yards on 32 carries and their leading rusher for the season, Ishmil Scott, was limited to 18 yards on 13 carries. That’s hard work. But the Tigers are stretched to the limits. Coach Joseph Cho’s team plays with great heart and effort, but they wore down […]
