Kahuku’s Liua good for a highlight or two

By Jerry Campany on August 24, 2013

Of all of the plays in third-ranked Kahuku’s offensive arsenal, the simplest might be the most effective. The two-time defending champions usually can be counted on to run the ball, and run it a lot. In Friday’s win over Kaimuki, they showed off a variety of option pitches to both sides, off-tackle plays and traps. Every one of them went to talented tailback Soli Afalava, who toted the ball 18 times for 120 yards, including second-half runs of 30 and […]

Update: Leilehua 28, Campbell 21, final

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2013

6:26 p.m. Partly cloudy here in Wahiawa. A perfect evening for prep football. I ran into Leilehua boys basketball coach Patrick Wetzel, who guaranteed me that it’ll rain later. “This is Wahiawa,” he reminded me. “It always rains.” If it rains, shooting video becomes problematic without an umbrella. Blogging becomes near impossible since I’m situated in the bleachers, not the press box. The box here is ancient and small, and every available window is occupied. No matter what, the view […]

Preview: Saturday’s football matchups

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2013

[Note: This is the extended version of the story that ran in Friday’s Star-Advertiser] Breaking down Saturday’s prep football games: Saturday, Aug. 24 games Kealakehe (0-0) at No. 4 Kamehameha (2-0) — Waveriders Coach Sam Papalii has often gone after the biggest fish available when it comes to preseason trips — even with massive losses to their starting lineup because of graduation. The Warriors are finding their footing under Doug Cosbie. A swarming, gang-tackling defense led in part by Mike […]

Preview: Friday’s football matchups

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2013

[Note: This is the extended version of the story that ran in Friday’s Star-Advertiser] Preseason, nonleague, interleague, nonconference … those games jumped into coaches’ plans early enough. This week, the OIA Red and MIL follow the OIA White with regular-season battles. Some teams will welcome the return of players who have been on academic probation. The usual course — there will likely be at least one OIA team that reverses course and peaks late in the season — is probably […]

It’s a lock: Kahuku opens OIA season

By Jerry Campany on August 22, 2013

Maybe it is a good thing that newspapers don’t print point spreads for high school football games any more, because no number would be too high when Kahuku opens league play. The Red Raiders are undefeated in OIA openers since the state championship era began in 1999, and they haven’t even been challenged. Only once in that span has a team finished within a touchdown of the Red Raiders, when Kalaheo challenged Kahuku but came up short 33-26 in 2007. […]

Video: #8 Farrington at #6 Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on August 22, 2013

For this year’s Kalihi Bowl, let’s just say the highlights are one-sided. Kamehameha’s fortress is in lock-down mode. Any transgressors are severely punished.

Top Players: QBs 8/21

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2013

I used to post updates (last year) every two weeks or so, with all positions in one post. Not anymore. Better to get as much data as possible and be deliberate. It’s tough enough with positions that have statistics available. When it gets to linemen, that turns more into art than science and I look for expert guidance. For now, a look at quarterbacks. I went on and on about the top QBs in the preseason top prospects list that […]

Punahou football nationally ranked

By Jerry Campany on August 21, 2013

Punahou, which was judged the second best team in Hawaii in the most recent Star-Advertiser poll, is the only Hawaii school ranked in Scout.com Fox Sports preseason top 50. No. 1 Saint Louis did not draw a ranking. The Crusaders were ranked No. 3 in the same poll way back in 1999. The Buffanblu are ranked 32nd on the list, but it doesn’t include their 24-14 win over Mililani last week. Punahou will get a chance to get even more […]
