By Paul Honda on September 2, 2013

The Raiders led 28-0 at intermission against the Saints in the inaugural ILH varsity league game for St. Francis. Jordan Ross, ‘Iolani’s sophomore running back, had 206 rushing yards and three touchdowns on eight carries.

OIA White playoff race heats up

By Brian McInnis on September 1, 2013

I had the opportunity to watch four contenders for the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Division title over the weekend, and walked off the Kailua field Saturday night with a distinct sense of the league’s pecking order. Kaiser routed Radford in every aspect for a 48-7 result on Friday night and Kalani handed Kalaheo its first league loss, 34-17 on Saturday. The standings remain close. Kaiser leads at 2-0, and four other teams — Kalani, Kalaheo, Radford and Nanakuli — are […]

McKinley players show their versatility

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 31, 2013

McKinley is off to its best start in more than a decade, thanks in large part to the Tigers’ versatility. Several of the Tigers’ playmakers do double (or triple) duty, and McKinley improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in OIA Red East play with a 35-0 win over Kaimuki on Saturday. McKinley last went 3-1 to start a season in 2002, when quarterback Abel Werner led the Tigers to the state tournament semifinals. McKinley’s run that season finally ended in […]

Canadian team enjoys experience at Leilehua

By Nick Abramo on August 31, 2013

Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda got some laughs from coaches and players as he addressed both teams at midfield after the Mules’ 65-6 victory over the visiting Vincent Massey Trojans on Friday night. “Next time, we’ll go up there and play you guys in hockey, right?” Tokuda said. The Trojans (0-1) hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and some of the players also play ice hockey, which is considered a national sport in Canada. The two teams ate a pregame meal together before the […]

Update: Kalani 34, Kalaheo 17, final

By Paul Honda on August 31, 2013

7:16 p.m. A busted punt — too much penetration forced the punter to run on fourth and about 30 — led to a quick score by Kalani to open the game. Noah Brum’s lob to Trevor Yamashita in the end zone gave the visiting Falcons a 7-0 lead early. Then came a shanked punt by Kalaheo and Kalani is driving again. The Falcons defense has bottled up Kalaheo’s prolific running back, Makena Johnston, so far. He broke about 85 yards […]

Mid-weekend mania

By Paul Honda on August 31, 2013

It’s quite nice here in Kailua in the press box. Technically, Brian “BMac” McInnis and I are in the video “box.” He’s doing the game story for Kalani-Kalaheo. I opted to come here and shoot video. I was prepared to do stats, too, unaware that BMac would be here. Stats? Yes. This is a matchup that could be special. Makena Johnston of Kalaheo is on a tear so far, huge numbers out of the backfield. He had a solid year […]

Castle’s Maeda vs. Farrington’s Okimoto

By Jerry Campany on August 31, 2013

Farrington coach Randall Okimoto and Castle boss Nelson Maeda have matched wits 12 times since Okimoto took over in Kalahi in 2002, but this might be the first time one of the teams was not a decided underdog. The teams play tonight at Castle in front of OC 16’s cameras. Okimoto leads the series 7-5, but it has been a cyclical affair. The Governors have won the last two and put up 94 points in doing it. Castle surprised the […]
