Pupule’s ballot: Kauai, yes

By Paul Honda on October 3, 2013

Here’s my ballot, plus pupule meanderings. 1. Punahou (6-0, 4-0 ILH). Star-Advertiser Top 10: Punahou. Wins vs. Top 10 teams: Mililani, Kamehameha, ‘Iolani. Also a win at Helix (Calif.). Losses vs. Top 10 teams: none. A clear-cut top dawg for another week. But Saint Louis awaits. It wasn’t that long ago (2005, I think) that the top three teams in the ILH took turns beating each other. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but you never know. 2. Mililani […]

Round 1 for Farrington, Kahuku?

By Jerry Campany on October 3, 2013

When the whistle blows to end the latest edition of the Kahuku–Farrington rivalry on Thursday night at Aloha Stadium, the winner will almost certainly not have the last word. The two teams have played multiple times in four of the last five years, but will have to make a stand against a tough West team to meet each other in the playoffs. It is a familiar refrain this time around, as the Govs and the Red Raiders represent the top […]

Kailua, McKinley make Aloha Stadium return

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 2, 2013

Appearances at Aloha Stadium were once fairly common for Kailua and McKinley. But not so much in recent years. Thursday’s meeting between the Surfriders and Tigers in the first game of an OIA Red East doubleheader will mark the first time they’ve played in Halawa since 2005. Kailua’s last game at Aloha Stadium was a 24-6 loss to Castle on Sept. 9, 2005. McKinley played there a couple of weeks later and lost to Farrington 23-0. Kailua is 39-42-3 at […]

Pac-Five relieved to get first win

By Nick Abramo on October 2, 2013

It was a game the Pac-Five football team did not want to lose. And the Wolfpack didn’t. They looked sharp last Friday in a 37-0 victory over St. Francis, a first-year ILH Division II varsity program. “We didn’t want to be the first team to lose (an ILH) game to them,” Pac-Five coach Kip Botelho said while heading to the bus outside the Aloha Stadium North end zone after the Wolfpack’s first win of the season. Some Pac-Five (a conglomeration of mostly small […]

Video: Castle at Moanalua

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 I admit, I didn’t expect Moanalua to run much, but Castle went all in to stop the pass. Na Menehune ran their share of dive/draw plays for awhile before Micah Kaneshiro let that pigskin fly with regularity. Castle’s still in a fight for a playoff berth. Moanalua? On a good night, they can scare anybody. A receiving corps like that, plus Kaneshiro’s arm, is a rare treat for most programs.

Castle and Kaimuki battle for playoff berth

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 1, 2013

Castle’s streak of postseason appearances hinges on maintaining its run of success against Kaimuki. The Knights (2-5 overall, 1-4 OIA Red East) travel to Hawaii Kai on Friday to face the Bulldogs (1-6, 0-5) with the conference’s final playoff berth at stake. Kickoff at Kaiser Stadium is scheduled for around 7:30 p.m. (following the 5 p.m. junior varsity game). Castle enters the regular-season finale for both teams a game ahead in the standings. But a Kaimuki win on homecoming night would […]

Kapolei charges back but falls just short

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 29, 2013

Two weeks after rallying past Leilehua, Kapolei nearly pulled off another remarkable comeback Friday night against Waianae. After falling behind by 22 at halftime and again in the third quarter, the Hurricanes made it a one-possession game midway through the fourth period. But the Kapolei offense wouldn’t get another chance to touch the ball again as Waianae managed to run out the clock for a 35-27 win. After seeing a chance to move into second place in the OIA Red […]
