ILH D1, D2 finals set after tripleheader

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 20, 2013

Images tend to blur after three games spread over close to nine hours, but Saturday’s ILH postseason tripleheader at Aloha Stadium provided several memorable performances.

Mililani’s defense is for real

By Billy Hull on October 20, 2013

Maybe the headline on this post is stating the obvious, but it’s worth repeating after Mililani’s 21-9 win over Leilehua on Saturday in the OIA Red quarterfinals. The Trojans’ defense is legit. Mililani’s defensive unit failed to give up a single point as Leilehua scored on a fumble return for a touchdown and a safety. The Mules, who had scored 66 against Waipahu and 54 versus Moanalua in their last two games, were held to 145 total yards of offense. […]

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2013

First, some summaries about quarterbacks. They’re in no particular order. Then my QB rankings are at the end. Note: Statistics as of Oct. 12. Larry Tuileta Punahou, 6-3, 205, Sr. 2013 to date (after eight games) • 89-157-3, 1,558 yards, 16 TD • Completion rate: .567 • Yards per attempt: 9.92 • QB rating: 169.85 • Skinny: I went into depth and length about “Tui” in an earlier post this week, which you can read here. Short version: This year’s […]

Update: Kamehameha 34, Saint Louis 28, Final

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2013

Kamehameha RB Brandon Kahookele is out. He’s wearing a knee brace and not dressed for the game. I’m told he will have his left knee looked at (MRI) later. Could be a huge loss for the Warriors. First quarter A huge pass play from Ryder Kuhns to Devan Stubblefield put the Crusaders in the red zone. Adam Noga scored on a short run off right tackle. Saint Louis 7, Kamehameha 0. 5:36 – T.J. Fitzsimmons drills a 41-yard field goal […]

LIVE BLOG: Mililani 21, Leilehua 9, Final

By Billy Hull on October 19, 2013

We’re set for kickoff at John Kauinana Stadium for the final OIA Red quarterfinal game. Mililani beat the Mules, 44-14, just three weeks ago here. Can Leilehua not only make it a game, but pull off the upset? 6:18 p.m.: Four different Trojans record a rush of at least 10 yards on Mililani’s opening drive. Vavae Malepeai fumbles at the 1 but Jacob Afele falls on top of it and Mililani takes a 7-0 lead, 7:26 Q1. 6:20 p.m.: Justin […]

Focused Kahuku takes care of business

Every once in a while, a coach will speak volumes of truth in one sentence. Reggie Torres did that Friday night

May the man for Campbell

By Jerry Campany on October 19, 2013

In many ways, running back Austin May is the forgotten man in Campbell’s pass-happy offense. But McKinley might never forget him after the Sabers beat the Tigers 40-13 at Campbell in the OIA Red quarterfinals on Friday night. May, the fifth-leading rusher in the seven-team OIA Red West, was overshadowed all season by quarterback Isaac Hurd and his fleet bunch of receivers despite his 330 yards and 5.8 per carry. Whenever Campbell needed a yard or two, Hurd would go […]

Mistakes haunt Kapolei

By Billy Hull on October 19, 2013

Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said the same thing four different times after Friday night’s 17-10 loss to Farrington in the OIA Red playoffs. “This one hurts,” he repeated again and again. How could it not? Kapolei’s 0-4 record all-time against Farrington was well documented heading into Friday night’s quarterfinal matchup. Neither team led by more than four points until Farrington quarterback Montana Liana threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Baguio to break the hearts of the Kapolei faithful. The […]
