Govs, Warriors clash in opening scrimmage

By Paul Honda on August 1, 2014

The future is so bright, sunglasses were in need on Thursday afternoon atop Kapalama Heights, where Kamehameha went to work. The Warriors suited up in full gear for a scrimmage with the Farrington Governors. After a summer of pass league games, constant workouts and intersquad contact, Thursday gave teams around the state a chance to knock around another team’s players for a change. Kamehameha didn’t suit up everybody. Defensive end/linebacker Mika Tafua sat out with a minor injury. Running back […]

Mililani picks up where it left off in OIA

By Nick Abramo on August 1, 2014

Central Oahu was rocking Thursday night as Mililani visited Leilehua and put a 48-21 hurt on the Mules in a preseason football scrimmage at a packed Hugh Yoshida Stadium. The contest between arch rivals was run like a real game with real referees, and a scoreboard clock, and Mililani’s Kainoa Wilson showed how much of a real deal he is by scoring four touchdowns, including two through the air from McKenzie Milton. “It’s a scrimmage, that’s all it is,” said […]

No. 8 Waianae All-State football

By Jerry Campany on July 31, 2014

Way back when Waianae ruled the OIA in the 1970s and 1980s, its success started with the last line of its defense. The Seariders, who appeared at No. 8 in the Star-Advertiser’s countdown, seem to always leave fans wondering why ‘good’ rarely turns to ‘great’ when the season winds down. An answer can probably be found in the defensive backfield. Waianae had the defensive player of the year seven times since 1975, five of them defensive backs. In all, 17 […]

No. 9 Leilehua All-State football

By Jerry Campany on July 30, 2014

Plenty of talent has moved through Wahiawa over the years, led by running back Adrian Murrell. The NFL veteran was first-team All-State three years in a row by the Honolulu Advertiser, the first to be so honored. Waianae’s Kennedy Tulimasealii, Kahuku’s Aofaga Wily, Castle’s Blaze Soares and Gerald Welch of Saint Louis are the only other 3-time first-team all state players. But no position has been as consistently good for the school as quarterback. Andrew Manley was among the best […]

Rivals will make a run at each other

By Jerry Campany on July 22, 2014

When the OIA’s new divisions and schedule were announced over the summer, there was one glaring omission — No Mililani-Leilehua rivalry game unless the teams happen to meet in the playoffs. Problem solved, sort of. Coaches for both schools got together and decided to honor the rivalry and schedule a scrimmage Thursday, July 31 at Leilehua. There will be no admission charged, but there will be certainly be a full house. Mules coach Nolan Tokuda says it will be run […]

Mililani all-state football, state championship era

By Jerry Campany on July 7, 2014

Kahuku was shut out of the first team on last year’s Star-Advertiser All-State football first team, the first time the school didn’t have someone mentioned on a newspaper’s first team since 1997. That leaves Mililani with the longest current OIA streak, getting a player on the first team every year since 2002. Saint Louis has been represented every year since 1982. Here is a list of all of the first-team all state players from Mililani in the state championship era. […]
