Anuenue fights to keep program alive

By Billy Hull on August 24, 2014

Decision day was last Monday for the Anuenue football program. Head coach Kelii Pio Adams and his staff got together with the players and had an honest talk about the future of the program. They would only have 16 players available for Saturday’s scheduled game against Kaimuki. Everybody was going to have to play two ways. Everyone was going to be dog tired by the middle of the fourth quarter. Injuries were a real concern. No matter, the kids just […]

LIVE BLOG: #9 Kapolei vs. #6 Farrington

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2014

4:43 p.m. Saturdays are a beautiful thing in prep football. Why? JV kickoffs at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium are at 3 p.m. If this were Friday game, it would be the usual 6 p.m. JV kickoff with a late varsity game to follow. Daytime football. Most excellent. A lot of folks have been looking forward to this game. Kapolei will bring its hard-nosed, run-first attack. The Kahuku smashmouth flavor is courtesy of new offensive coordinator Darren Johnson, who featured the I-formation […]

Nation’s best? St. John Bosco looked the part

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2014

It was impossible, really, to watch the high-efficiency offense and technically sound defense of St. John Bosco on Saturday and not have this thought: Dynasty. Dynasty as the state champion of California in 2013. Dynasty as the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps rankings in ’13. Not so long ago, it was Saint Louis of Hawaii that had that kind of machinery, a team so well-tuned, well coached and uber-talented that it won 14 Prep Bowl titles and one state […]

Campbell looks like a complete team

By Nick Abramo on August 23, 2014

Here they come, so have fun stopping them. Campbell running back Terell Johnson slashes and gets to the outside quickly. Teammate Austin May changes the rhythm by taking draws up the middle with a combination of timing, toughness and speed. And then there’s Ezra Savea, who is only a sophomore at quarterback, throwing accurate passes in his first varsity football start. Add in some sure-handed targets like Kona Reiny-Aloy and the rangy Jayce Bantolina, along with a hungry line, and […]

Kahuku gets to the end zone

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 23, 2014

The statistics might be credited under “scoring offense,” but Kahuku’s defense and special teams have contributed a chunk of the Red Raiders’ point total two games into the season. Kahuku scored in all three phases against Kapolei in its OIA Red opener and again on Friday in a 51-10 home win over Waipahu. Kahuku returned a fumble for a touchdown and Kesi Ah Hoy took a kickoff back 94 yards in the Red Raiders’ 26-0 spurt on their way to […]

Waianae enjoys the long ride

By Billy Hull on August 22, 2014

Much has been made of the new divisions in the OIA this year. For the first time since the old red-white-blue relegation system that died in 1995, schools are not aligned based on geography, which is why Waianae made its first trip to Kaiser in more than 35 years on Friday. The ride home was made just a little easier after a 26-7 victory that ended Kaiser’s 14-game winning streak. Already in an 0-1 hole after losing to Moanalua last […]

LIVE BLOG: Waianae 26, Kaiser 7

By Billy Hull on August 22, 2014

Kaiser got its wish in the offseason when it moved up into Division I after crushing the competition in winning the 2013 Division II state championship. Now the Cougars, coming off a 52-7 win over Aiea, face their first big test in visiting Waianae for a clash at Kaiser Stadium. The Seariders, who lost 30-23 to Moanalua last week, haven’t played the Cougars at Kaiser Stadium dating back to the 1970s. Waianae has won nine of the last 10 meetings, […]
