Saint Louis’ Tagovailoa spirals into starting job

By Nick Abramo on September 10, 2014

Saint Louis coach Cal Lee doesn’t have a quarterback controversy. What he does have is two outstanding players at that position. For the first few games, sophomore Tua Tagovailoa and senior Ryder Kuhns platooned, but now the Tagovailoa owns the starting job. “Tua is our guy at quarterback,” Cal said on the phone Wednesday. “Ryder is supportive and that’s the way it has to be.” Kuhns had a phenomenal year as a junior, throwing for 2,016 yards, 25 touchdowns and […]

What competition?

By Nick Abramo on September 10, 2014

Blowouts are not fun for the losing team. “They’re not fun for the winning team, either,” said one coach recently. Blowouts are certainly not fun for the fans, either. Something needs to be done about this, not just because HawaiiPrepWorld.com says so, but because the time has come for change. Here are the lopsided Oahu football scores during conference games that we’re talking about: >> Kamehameha 48, St. Francis 9 >> Punahou 52, Damien 6 >> Saint Louis 60, Pac-Five […]

A man on the move (extended)

By Paul Honda on September 9, 2014

(Here’s an extended version of this morning’s feature story). If Ranan Mamiya wrote the details of his personal highlights, they would be engulfed by names and numbers. As in the names and jersey numbers of his teammates — his blockers. For his nine rushing touchdowns, the numerals worn by his offensive linemen, a.k.a. the Bamboolahs. For his touchdown returns on kickoffs and punts, the numbers of his wall builders. And for that touchdown pass he threw on Saturday against Aiea, […]

Pac-Five passing the time away

By Nick Abramo on September 9, 2014

Saying Pac-Five is a passing team is an understatement. The Wolfpack football team heaves the ball over and over again. Why not? When you play against the behemoths on the defensive sevens of the ILH Division I superpowers, you just, flatly, are not going to be able to mount a running game. So, it’s pass, pass, pass for Pac-Five sophomore quarterback Kainoa Ferreira. He lit up the Halawa sky with 65 attempts in a 60-13 loss to Saint Louis on […]

Composure is the key for Nanakuli, Watson says

By Nick Abramo on September 8, 2014

Record-wise, the Nanakuli football team is doing quite well and looking like strong contenders for a league championship and a state-tournament berth. Not so fast. Nanakuli coach Keala Watson said he doesn’t look at the positives nearly as much as he does the negatives. And, the oft-smiling, soft-spoken Watson is no negative Nelly. The former University of Hawaii defensive lineman is concerned that when the schedule gets tougher, the type of errors the team is making now will keep them […]

VIDEO: Aiea vs. #5 Farrington

By Paul Honda on September 8, 2014

No letdown for unbeaten Farrington. Running backs Challen Faamatau and Ranan Mamiya score two TDs each in a 52-0 win over Aiea.
