Another heartbreaking loss for Kapolei

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2014

What can anyone say to a team like this? It’s five games into the OIA Blue Division season and the talented, big and fast Kapolei Hurricanes are 1-4. It’s not a total shock, not with a first-year starter at quarterback, but Hurricane fans have gotten plenty of visuals. The eye test says the final results should be better. Kapolei is pretty good in so many areas, and still, defeat awaits the ‘Canes at the finish line. Saturday night was another […]

LIVE BLOG: #6 Campbell 14, Kapolei 13

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2014

Traffic was brutal from Honolulu to the Leeward side, but it’s always beautiful here. Hot, no breeze, but lots of blue sky. Those of us who left town at 3 p.m. or so didn’t get here until about 4:45. That’s about as long as it takes to drive from Kona to Hilo, give or take 15 minutes. The JV game is not starting at 5 p.m., which we were told was going to be the case starting with this weekend. […]

Win it for 13

By Billy Hull on September 12, 2014

It should have been a night of celebration and excitement. After the postponement of its scheduled season-opener against Waianae, the Kamehameha football team had to wait three weeks before finally starting its season Aug. 29. The Warriors traveled to California to play Del Oro as part of the 2014 Honor Bowl in Loomis, Calif., and beat the third-ranked team in the region and a team that made it to the CIF Division I state final a year ago. The excitement […]

Punahou does it with defense, too

By Nick Abramo on September 10, 2014

Offensively, the Punahou football team is so efficient that it’s quite possible for the average fan to overlook the Buffanblu’s defense. Opponents ignoring their rock-solid unit would be making a serious mistake. The biggest testament to their fortitude is that they only gave up a touchdown to Saint Louis’ potent run-and-shoot offense, the same offense that put up 47 points a few weeks earlier in a loss to Mililani, last year’s state Division I runner-up. Alas, top-ranked Punahou (2-0, 2-0 […]

2014 football overall statistical leaders

By Billy Hull on September 10, 2014

Farrington is once again churning up yards on the ground while Pac-Five, Moanalua and Leilehua have taken to the air like they’re known to do. The biggest surprise might be Kaiser junior running back Jensen MacDaniel, who has rushed for at least 159 yards in each of his first three varsity games. Although the Cougars had to forfeit their opening game against Aiea for the use of an ineligible player, the statistics from the game still do count, making McDaniel […]
