17 years later: Kalani finally beats Kaimuki

By Paul Honda on September 20, 2014

It’s hard to comprehend, but it’s a plain fact. The Kalani Falcons hadn’t beaten the Kaimuki Bulldogs on the football field since 1997. Part of that is because the ‘Dogs spent quite a few years in Division I. Part of that is also because Kalani’s program had several lean years until the recent uprising. But the streak, which was six losses in a row to Kaimuki, came to an end tonight with Kalani’s 21-20 comeback win at Kaiser Stadium. Here’s […]

By Billy Hull on September 20, 2014

Sophomore running back KJ Pascua rushed for a career-high 190 yards and five touchdowns to help ‘Iolani top 60 points in a game for the first time in the Prep Bowl/state championship era with a 62-19 win over Pac-Five on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Pascua and backup Storm Lotomau, who had 122 rushing yards, became the first ‘Iolani duo to top 100 rush yards in the same ILH game since Ryan Dung and Justin Yamamoto accomplished the feat in […]

‘Bad call’ took away Castle’s momentum

By Nick Abramo on September 20, 2014

Castle coach Nelson Maeda called a timeout to tell the officials that the call they made could be a game-changer. And he was right, but the officials didn’t change what both Maeda and Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto termed a “bad call” after the Seasiders’ 21-13 win Friday night at Raymond Torii Field. With the Knights leading 7-0, a short pass by Stephen Lee appeared to fall incomplete. But Waianae’s Mosiah Brame picked the ball off the ground and ran 22 […]

Kapolei’s defense draws the line

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 20, 2014

Kapolei defensive coordinator Brad Hewahewa made his line a promise. “I told them if I ever get interviewed the first guys I’m going to (mention) is the D-line,” Hewahewa said. Hewahewa got that chance after the Hurricanes’ 20-0 homecoming night shutout of Kailua on Friday. The Hurricanes held Kailua to 127 yards in total offense, 43 coming on the Surfriders’ final possession, and Hewahewa was quick to credit the defensive front. “I always tell them it starts with the D-line,” […]

When Trojans look like Ducks

By Paul Honda on September 20, 2014

Rod York was a defensive lineman at UH. He’s now the engineer of a offense that scores 53 points per game. That’s what being an observant, logical and intuitive student of the game can do. For two quarters, his Mililani Trojans were stifled. Sure, they had 15 points on the scoreboard at James Campbell High School. But if not for one of Tielu Mamea’s three interceptions, which led to a Trojans touchdown shortly before halftime, the men of Troy could […]
