Trojans thrive on takeaways: 19 INTs so far

By Paul Honda on October 5, 2014

Dick Tomey came to the University of Hawaii nearly four decades ago, a somber, authentic man who spoke his mind each week on his weekly show. With a shortage of talent and depth, he turned a 3-8 team into a consistent winner. Special teams? He turned fans on to the joys of net punting yardage. Defense? Oh, he relished building a stingy unit. And often enough, he said this of the forward pass: “Three things happen when you throw the […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Fehoko vs. Tafai

By Billy Hull on October 4, 2014

Five-star Texas Tech commit Breiden Fehoko is a monster on the Govs defensive line. Double teams and even triple teams aren’t uncommon against the 6-foot-3, 286-pounder, who will follow in the footsteps of older brother V.J. and become a Red Raider in the spring as he graduates early. Before he gets there, Fehoko has his senior season at Farrington to complete. The Govs have a chance to wrap up a first-round bye with a victory over Campbell on Saturday night […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 28, Waianae 15

By Billy Hull on October 4, 2014

With storm clouds hovering over Aloha Stadium, it seems like the perfect weather for another Waianae-Kahuku clash. Kickoff will be at about 5:30 p.m. as the junior varsity games beforehand ran late. Waianae gets the ball first and immediately loses 15 yards on a bad snap that QB Ioane Kaluhiokalani can’t handle. Waianae manages a first down on third-and-14 as Kaluhiokalani finds John Barbieto for 14 yards. Seariders punt on fourth-and-1 from the 38. Let’s see what Kahuku has on […]

LIVE BLOG: Mililani 48, Moanalua 26, final

By Paul Honda on October 4, 2014

First quarter The rain has stopped — for now. The synthetic turf has great drainage beneath. The lake that had formed at the 40-yard line a few hours ago is long gone. Traction is not bad, too. A lot of rubber granules down on that turf. We might get that wild passing frenzy after all. Mililani QB McKenzie Milton averages 27.5 attempts per game. Moanalua QB Kawika Keama-Jacobe averages 33.8. The Trojans draw first blood. An interception and 27-yard return […]

Damien in rare shootout with Saint Louis

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 4, 2014

Damien had scored a total of 14 points against Saint Louis in a four-year span leading up to the latest meeting. The Monarchs matched that figure in their first two possessions on Friday, relying largely on the height and hands of wideout Kapiinaokala King. But Damien couldn’t keep pace with Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who threw for five touchdowns in an efficient performance and the Crusaders pulled away to a 54-34 win at Aloha Stadium. Tagovailoa completed 10 of […]

Noa joins the 3,000 club as Punahou rolls on

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 4, 2014

Punahou receiver Kanawai Noa joined elite company on Friday in passing the 3,000-yard mark in the first quarter of the Buffanblu’s blowout of Pac-Five at Aloha Stadium. The senior entered the game with 2,928 career yards and joined former Saint Louis standout Gerald Welch and Punahou alum Miah Ostrowski in the 3,000-yard club on his second reception of the game, a 52-yard strike down the left side from Ephraim Tuliloa. Noa finished the two-play scoring drive on the next play […]
