Kapolei’s warpath goes north to Kahuku

By Nick Abramo on October 14, 2014

The time of reckoning has come for Kapolei. The Hurricanes (4-4) started the year with three straight losses, balanced the ship and have now won their last three games by shutout. The preseason words of coach Darren Hernandez seem prescient now — “We could be 0-3 and still turn out to be a good team.” Yes, but now the question rears its head, “How good?” Kapolei will certainly have that answer on Friday night at Kahuku, the scene of a […]

Kaiser DB Tom waiting for OK to play

By Nick Abramo on October 14, 2014

A decision on the playing status of Kaiser defensive back Nicolas Tom will be made Thursday, according to Cougars coach Cameron Higgins. Tom was hurt and taken to the hospital in an ambulance during last Friday’s 54-48 OIA Division I first-round playoff victory over Moanalua at Kaiser Stadium. With the win, Kaiser (5-3) advanced to play at Mililani (7-0) in the quarterfinals on Friday. According to Higgins, Tom was attempting to tackle Na Menehune quarterback Kawika Keama-Jacobe, missed and, with […]

How to repeat: Punahou’s hunger games

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2014

Punahou put up numbers against one of the state’s best defenses, Kamehameha, that are uniquely amazing. Punahou won a widely anticipated showdown on Friday, 47-7. It’s not that Kamehameha is bad. They’re very good. Punahou is just in another world. • Running back Wayne Taulapapa rushed for 126 yards and two TDs on just 11 carries. He may not have expected to play just one half, but that’s been the common thread all season for a team (and RB) who […]

Kamehameha backed into a corner

By Jerry Campany on October 14, 2014

Was it really Kamehameha’s fault? The Warriors joined the list of teams to get throttled by No. 1 Punahou last week, and were punished for it by the voters. Kamehameha dropped two spots behind Kahuku and Farrington in the Star-Advertiser’s latest football poll. Their opponent this week, Saint Louis, stayed firm at No. 3 behind the Buffanblu and No. 2 Mililani. Here is the latest edition: 1. Punahou 2. Mililani 3. Saint Louis 4. Kahuku 5. Farrington 6. Kamehameha 7. […]

Cry of the Wolf: Aerial circus enters playoffs

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2014

By halftime, it seemed to be Pac-Five’s kind of game. Sophomore Kainoa Ferreira had already thrown 38 passes, and though just 17 were completed, he hadn’t thrown an interception. At some point in the second half, Damien’s secondary would probably wear out. Nobody has to cover a receiver downfield 38 times in a half, unless they’re playing the Wolfpack. Double that and it would’ve been 76 pass attempts for the game. Instead, Damien ran the ball with enough success in […]

Monarch Airlines: Damien still balanced

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2014

To air, for the Damien Monarchs, is to be human. The program that not so long ago generated speedboy running backs like Kama Bailey and Kealoha Pilares didn’t take long to recognize the potential growth of its passing game. The Monarchs aired the ball out 30 times in a 26-21 win over Pac-Five on Friday, a far cry from the days when Pilares and Bailey were churning out 200-yard games on the ground. It’s not like coach Eddie Klaneski eschewed […]
