St. Francis unbowed

By Brian McInnis on October 17, 2014

The St. Francis football team is still in search of its first victory against Interscholastic League of Honolulu competition. The Saints sure threatened to end that hunt on Friday afternoon. They played up-and-up with the ILH’s annual Division II power, ‘Iolani, for most of the Raiders’ eventual 28-6 win at Eddie Hamada Field. It ended the season for the undermanned Saints, who concluded the second campaign in program history at 2-7. Saints coach Mike Ulufale gave an impassioned speech to […]

By Paul Honda on October 17, 2014

Pre-game Here we go. It’s 9:19 p.m. after a long D-II playoff game between Damien and Pac-Five, which Damien won 42-28. Weather is clear and just a bit breezy on the field. Hurricane Ana is nearing, but weather has held up nicely tonight. Winner moves on to face defending ILH champ Punahou next week. Loser is pau for the season. Saint Louis won the regular-season matchup with Kamehameha 44-38. Nothing would surprise me tonight. Not a low-scoring game. Not a […]

LIVE BLOG: Mililani 54, Kaiser 14, Final

By Billy Hull on October 17, 2014

It’s loser goes home in the OIA playoffs tonight as 10th-ranked Kaiser heads West to face No. 2 Mililani. Kickoff is 7 p.m. 6 p.m. update: Kaiser is off the bus and it looks like junior linebacker Parker Higgins isn’t going to play tonight. He’s got his jersey on but is in shorts and slippers and listening to music while his teammates get ready. Higgins injured his knee in the fourth quarter in a 54-48 win over Moanalua last week. […]

LIVE BLOG: Damien 42, Pac-Five 28, final

By Paul Honda on October 17, 2014

First quarter >> Pac-Five’s game-opening series covers 66 yards, but they stall out at the Damien 4-yard line: QB Kainoa Ferreira scrambles for no gain, he throws and incomplete pass to Tsubasa Brennan in the end zone, a 4-yard keeper by Ferreira, and a rushed (against the play clock) incomplete pass by Ferreira to the motion man, Brennan. Either he lost track of time (inexperience) or the coaches did. It was an interesting first possession. The Wolfpack did two things […]

Nanakuli is not taking Kalani lightly

By Nick Abramo on October 15, 2014

Lyle Tuiloma stands tall in Nanakuli. If you gaze across the field during a Golden Hawks practice, game or postgame handshake, it’s doubtful that you’ll miss seeing the solidly built Tuiloma in jersey No. 74. That’s why it wasn’t a surprise to see Tuiloma, front and center, pointing toward his teammates and coaches in a celebration photo taken by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Bruce Asato moments after Nanakuli’s 28-21 comeback win over Pearl City on Sept. 26. It also wasn’t a […]

Can Kaiser pull off the unthinkable?

By Billy Hull on October 15, 2014

Since 2005, only two teams with byes into the quarterfinals of the OIA Red/Division I playoffs failed to reach the semis with the top two seeds in each division a combined 24-0 over the last six seasons. Jerry Campany wrote about every upset since 2002 before last year’s quaterfinals. That streak may come to an end this year with highly intriguing matchups across the island on Friday night. The one team which hasn’t been threatened in league play this year […]

Arms race: Punahou yet to be challenged

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2014

So, is it art? Or is it science? Is it pure intelligence? Or is it absolute passion? Punahou is all of the above, and by nature of this sport called football, you can toss in elegant brutality and and surgery in chaos. The Buffanblu’s 47-7 wipeout of a very good Kamehameha squad re-emphasized one of the truths about Hawaii high school football in 2014: if you build it, they will come. All that building has Punahou perched in a position […]

VIDEO: Aiea at Waianae

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2014

Aiea was a decided underdog in the opening round of the OIA Division I playoffs, but rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to take a 20-14 lead. However, Na Alii couldn’t find a solution for Jurick Valdez. The fullback bolted up the hash marks for three long touchdown runs as the Seariders rallied for a 42-26 victory.
