OIA passes transfer rule (extended)

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2014

(Here’s the longer version of this morning’s story in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.) It was months in the works, but the Oahu Interscholastic Association has made it official: transferring student-athletes will have to sit out one year. The vote by OIA principals was 18-0 in favor of the change. Currently, a student-athlete can play immediately at another school once the transfer process, whether by moving into the district or district exception, is complete. The new rule will require all student-athletes to […]

Essentially, it’s Mililani’s ‘O’ vs. Kahuku’s ‘D’

By Nick Abramo on October 28, 2014

One team won with ease. One barely scraped by. That was the OIA semifinals on Thursday night, and we are left with a showdown that pits the league’s best offense hands-down (No. 2 Mililani) against, arguably, the league’s best defense (No. 3 Kahuku) on Halloween night. Of course, there will be people who argue that the Trojans (10-0) have the best defense, and they may have a point. The Red Raiders gave up one more point than Mililani, 104 to […]

Another spot will be determined Saturday, when Farrington and Campbell meet for third place in the OIA. The state qualifiers follow. The seeding will be determined later by the HHSAA. Division I >> Punahou (ILH champion) >> Mililani […]

Top 10s: Mililani closes gap; Kahuku girls drop out

By Nick Abramo on October 27, 2014

Two voters switched their No. 1 choice from Punahou to Mililani, but the Buffanblu are still on top of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, which comes out in the Tuesday edition. Punahou (7-0), which squeaked by Saint Louis 35-28 in the ILH playoffs on Friday, got 18 first-place votes and 234 points in this week’s poll, slightly less than the 20 and 236 last week. The Trojans (10-0) routed Campbell 47-15 in the OIA semifinals Thursday, and got 221 […]

High Voltage: Chargers offense dangerous

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2014

They are, after all, a perennial title contender. Again. When the Pearl City Chargers took the best shots that the Radford Rams had to give, they regrouped, stuck to the game plan and pulled away for a 35-20 win on Saturday. That earned the Chargers (8-1) a spot in this week’s OIA Division II title game against Nanakuli and guaranteed them a berth in the state tournament. For a half, it seemed iffy. Radford (6-4) had success moving the ball […]

Punahou’s latest win has vaulted the Buffanblu to No. 22 in the USA Today Super 25 national football rankings. Punahou edged Saint Louis 35-28 on Friday to capture the ILH championship. USA Today had Punahou just outside of the Super 25 at No. 26 in last week’s poll. The MaxPreps Xcellent 25 bumped Punahou higher to No. 21 in its latest rankings. The Buffanblu (7-0) has been atop the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 all season.
