LIVE BLOG: Leilehua-Mililani scrimmage

By Paul Honda on July 30, 2015

Got here to John Kauinana Stadium for the varsity scrimmage… and turns out they started it at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7:30. The JV scrimmage got cut short, I’m told. In this scrimmage, the scoreboard is running and the format is game-like at 12 minutes per quarter. Mililani is up 34-7 with less than 4 minutes left in the second quarter. McKenzie Milton just drove his offensive unit roughly 50 yards for a TD, throwing a 4-yard TD pass to […]

LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis-Kapolei scrimmage

By Paul Honda on July 30, 2015

It’s about 90 degrees with no trade winds this late afternoon in Kapolei. Perfect weather for football. All weather is perfect for football, right? The Saint Louis Crusaders and Kapolei Hurricanes are nearly 30 minutes into their first respective scrimmages of the “fall” season. (School begins so early compared to the rest of the country, as does football season, that it’s still summer time — a long way from fall.) I got here at 5:45 p.m. or so, 15 after […]

Vartic and Nichols now with Saint Louis

By Nick Abramo on July 30, 2015

As is the case in recent years, large numbers of football players have transferred from one Hawaii high school to another this summer, and we are just scratching the surface of finding out who is where now. Hawaii Prep World learned within the last week that two top players from the Neighbor Islands — Luca Vartic and Tristan Nichols — are now playing for Saint Louis. Vartic, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound defensive back, played for Konawaena last season and he has FBS […]

Tagovailoa family in spotlight Thursday

By Nick Abramo on July 29, 2015

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is about to start his junior season as Saint Louis’ starter, and fans can get an early look Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when the Crusaders visit Kapolei for a scrimmage. But he will not be the only Tagovailoa on the field. His brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, is a freshman quarterback for the Hurricanes, and their father, Galu Tagovailoa, is a Kapolei assistant. “I don’t think Taulia’s a starter,” Tua told Hawaii Prep World at Saint Louis’ practice on […]

Game at Cal’s stadium in Punahou’s future

By Nick Abramo on July 29, 2015

Punahou football coach Kale Ane called his team’s upcoming trip to California on Labor Day weekend “a great opportunity.” The Division I state runner-up Buffanblu will meet the Del Oro Golden Eagles of Loomis, Calif., at Calfornia Memorial Stadium on the Cal-Berkeley campus on Sept. 4. “We are excited about our chance to play them,” Ane said over the phone Tuesday. “They played a great game against Kamehameha last year. They have a lot of players back and are expected […]
