Mililani holds off Kahuku in Tata’s first test

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2015

Two words: McKenzie Milton. If you don’t know by now, he makes the Mililani offense go, and he’s been doing it for two-plus years. Milton and the Trojans defeated Kahuku 44-30 on Friday night in a scrimmage at Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium. At times, Kahuku pressured Milton, but the senior quarterback still found holes to pass and run through in leading the way. It was a statement game of sorts for the Trojans, the defending state champions who stopped the […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku-Mililani scrimmage

By Paul Honda on July 31, 2015

It’s a fair question. Why are we covering a scrimmage? Make that plural, since I was at two of them (partially) yesterday. Even better, why are they keeping score at the scrimmages here at John Kauinana Stadium in beautiful Mililani? And why are both teams warming up with the kind of fiery intensity usually reserved for a state-tournament game? Questions, questions, questions. Who knows exactly what the answers are. I just know the setup by Mililani — scrimmages against Leilehua, […]

Kamehameha, Farrington duel and dine

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2015

It was a close encounter, and just a controlled scrimmage, but the Kamehameha and Farrington football teams finally got to put the pads on and see what it’s like to really compete for the first time this season on Thursday. No score was kept, and, unofficially, Kamehameha scored three TDs to Farrington’s two, but that statistic is beside the point. The contest represented the de facto battle of Kalihi. The two schools are 1.2 miles apart and many players know […]

Four Farrington players gone to Las Vegas team

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2015

Like it or not, transfers are and have been a big part of Hawaii high school football for a long time. Many observers feel that Farrington was fortunate to pick up quarterback Justin Uahinui from Kaiser last week, and that may prove to be true. But Farrington, it turns out, lost at least five starters to other schools over the summer, including four that went to Silverado in Las Vegas where former Philadelphia Eagles star Randall Cunningham is the head […]

Kahuku pumped to play Mililani state champs

By Nick Abramo on July 30, 2015

After wrapping up their Thursday practice session, Kahuku’s football players went home for dinner, homework and sleep. About 28 miles to the southwest, Kahuku’s opponent for a 7 p.m. Friday scrimmage — the Mililani Trojans — were on their home field easing to an unofficial 48-14 scrimmage win over Leilehua. Now, it’s Kahuku’s turn to go to Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium and see what they have in the tank against the Trojans, who went undefeated last season on the way […]

Sasaoka kicking for Kahuku this season

By Nick Abramo on July 30, 2015

Reliable place-kicker Kekoa Sasaoka is playing for Kahuku this season after transferring earlier this summer from Farrington. Sasaoka, who is 5 feet 9 and 219 pounds, made the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State second team as a junior for the Governors a year ago. Earlier this week, Farrington coach Randall Okimoto confirmed Sasaoka transferred to the OIA rival Red Raiders. On Thursday, Sasaoka was at Kahuku’s practice session on the campus’ upper field. “You know when he’s kicking, if it’s 40 yards […]

Kahuku’s Anae gets scholarship offer from BYU

By Nick Abramo on July 30, 2015

Kahuku senior defensive end Bradlee Anae did not offer the information, but it turns out that he received a football scholarship offer from BYU a while back. It just so happened that at the Red Raiders’ practice Thursday, teammate Keala Santiago walked by. Santiago, a defensive back, wide receiver and kick returner, has five college offers, and so he was asked by the media, “Any more offers, Keala?” He said no, but with the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Anae standing there, the […]
