By Billy Hull on August 8, 2015

After weather forced its cancelation last year, the Father Bray Classic returns for a 52nd year. Host ‘Iolani takes on Kamehameha-Maui in the second game of a doubleheader at Aloha Stadium. The Raiders haven’t lost a Father Bray game since 2003 against McKinley. The two schools have met once before with ‘Iolani thumping the Warriors 39-0 in the 2008 Father Bray game. Junior Jarin Yokogawa gets the start at QB for ‘Iolani and completes his first three passes. Keaghan Gomes […]

LIVE BLOG: Mililani 41, Saint Louis 21, F

By Paul Honda on August 8, 2015

Scrimmage. This is not an official football game, and yet the bleachers are already half-filled for the preliminary junior varsity matchup between Saint Louis and Mililani. This is what we know. 1. Saint Louis has not installed its special teams yet. Coach Cal Lee knew he wouldn’t need to have that cemented until their first preseason game, and since this isn’t a scrimmage that includes full punt and kickoff coverage and returns, Saint Louis couldn’t play a complete game even […]

LIVE BLOG: Pac-Five 16, Kalani 14

By Billy Hull on August 8, 2015

Two intriguing Division II teams kick off the Father Bray Classic on Saturday night as Pac-Five opens against Kalani. In last season’s opener, Pac-Five quarterback Kainoa Ferreira made his varsity debut as a sophomore and threw for a school-record 515 yards in a win over King Kekaulike. The Falcons are coming off back-to-back OIA D-II playoff appearances and are 10-9 over the last two seasons. Kalani played in the Father Bray Classic two years ago, losing 51-36 to host ‘Iolani. […]

I.D. check: Warriors, Seariders move forward

By Paul Honda on August 8, 2015

Two young quarterbacks thrown into the fire. Big-play guys emerging. Defensive fronts tested. In so many ways, Kamehameha and Waianae sought similar victories in different places on the field Friday night at Raymond Torii Field. Kamehameha turned a 13-6 deficit into a 33-13 nonconference win, but there’s plenty of reason for optimism on both sidelines. >> Boogie Nights Sophomore Thomas “Boogie” Yam didn’t start the game, but that turned out to be a formality once senior Fatu Sua-Godinet switched to […]

McGoldrick makes a run at Castle record

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 8, 2015

Castle receiver Jeremy McGoldrick repeatedly tested the Kailua secondary on Friday night and threatened a school record in the process. The speedy wideout — listed as a 5-foot-7, 140-pound quarterback/defensive back on the Knights’ 29-player roster — caught eight passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Willie Ewaliko in Castle’s 34-24 season-opening loss to Kailua at Alex Kane Stadium. McGoldrick’s yardage total came up eight short of Shaydon Kehano’s school record set on Oct. 2, 2009 in a 39-21 […]

Impressive start for Kailua offense

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 8, 2015

After scoring just five touchdowns in its first six games last year, Kailua matched that mark on opening night of Joseph Wong’s second season as head coach. The Surfriders had trouble finding the end zone for most of last season and struggled a bit finishing drives early in their nonconference game against visiting Castle on Friday. But senior quarterback Noah Auld and receiver Martin Tigilau connected on three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and Kailua pulled away to a […]

Kapolei enters the 21st century

By Billy Hull on August 8, 2015

That headline could seem a little harsh, but it came from coach Darren Hernandez himself after watching his Kapolei offense open the season with a 49-28 win over Kaiser on Friday night. The only head coach Kapolei has had since starting its varsity program in 2002, Hernandez is ready to shun the physical, run-oriented offense he’s preached the entire time he’s been at Kapolei. Just look at Kapolei’s history. Only nine times in Hernandez’s first 12 years at Kapolei had […]
