Green Living: Bulldogs embrace unity

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2015

Changing the mentality of a football culture takes conviction. At Kaimuki, David Tautofi and his staff, which includes young brothers and former college players Darrell and Daniel, the task is a mission. So far, mission accomplished. The Bulldogs are 3-2 in OIA Division II play with three games left on the regular-season schedule. A win over another tough D-II team, Waialua (3-2 in league play) would be a big step toward a playoff berth. Up front, college prospect Jon-Wendell Nisa […]

For York and Wong, this is a Waimanalo affair

By Nick Abramo on September 25, 2015

Rod York and Joe Wong. Waimanalo boys. Former offensive linemen. Mutual respect. They talk highly of each other, and, in one sense, they’ll get to duke it out Saturday night in Kailua. They’ll be on the sidelines coaching their respective teams in an effort to beat the other with lots at stake in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Blue. On one side is York, who has taken Mililani from an annual outside contender to last year’s Division I state championship. On […]

McKinley first-year football head coach Sam Cantiberos confirmed Thursday night that the school has postponed a decision to Monday on whether to play the season’s final game or not. On Tuesday, McKinley announced it was forfeiting Saturday’s home game against Leilehua at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Initial reports from the Oahu Interscholastic Association had the Tigers (0-6, 0-5 OIA Red) also forfeiting the Oct. 3 home game against Castle at Roosevelt. But Cantiberos and athletic director Bob Morikuni said Tuesday […]

Lee, Ane discuss Friday’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 contest

By Nick Abramo on September 25, 2015

The plan was simple: ask for quick thoughts from head coaches Cal Lee and Kale Ane so Hawaii Prep World can let people know what’s on their minds as No. 1 Saint Louis and No. 2 Punahou prepare to engage each other for the first time this season. If trophies were given for brevity, Lee (sorry Kale) would have added another to his case. Lee’s answer by text: “They (the Buffanblu) are undefeated. That says it all.” The answer was […]

Ane: Punahou has unique QB situation

By Nick Abramo on September 24, 2015

Before Punahou football head coach Kale Ane uttered the word “unique” to describe his quarterback situation on Wednesday during a phone interview, it was already evident among Hawaii high school fans. How many teams can boast not one, not two, but three highly capable quarterbacks? Ever in Hawaii? Doubtful. But Ane was also thinking ahead to a point in the near future, when some hard decisions might need to be made. Right now, it’s pretty simple. Senior Ephraim Tuliloa was […]

Tagovailoa ready to go; Tuliloa’s status uncertain

By Nick Abramo on September 23, 2015

Junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missed No. 1 Saint Louis’ last game with a right calf sprain, and the Crusaders (4-0, 2-0 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) are reporting the good news that he will be ready to play in Friday’s showdown of unbeatens against Punahou. “He’s good to go,” Saint Louis head coach Cal Lee texted Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday. Tagovailoa suffered the injury in the Crusaders’ 31-27 victory over Kamehameha on Sept. 12. He sat out the 28-17 win […]
