Kapolei rides defense into playoffs

Kapolei enters the OIA Division I playoffs with a four-game winning streak powered in no small part by the Hurricanes defense. The Hurricanes (5-3, 4-3 OIA Blue) held their final three opponents of the regular season to a touchdown or less while allowing a total of 19 points in wins over Campbell, Farrington and Aiea. After starting the season 0-3, the Kaiser Cougars have bounced back to win four of their last five games to finish in third place in the OIA Red following a 22-9 win over Leilehua on Friday night at Kaiser Stadium. For anyone in the dark about how the Interscholastic League of Honolulu will decide its Division I football champion this season, here is an explanation, courtesy of interim executive director Georges Gilbert: Each of the four teams play two round-robin rounds of three games each.
