Sports to Ponder: This here’s a story about ‘D’

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2015

Offensive fireworks are the norm in high school and college football these days, but don’t discount defense and what it can do for your team. Think back to the old days, if you can, about your proverbial daddy’s football team. That’s when runs up the gut were what you did extensively and close games were usually decided by a 2-point conversion or the unsuccessful attempt at such. For every 76-53 rampage where there is all kinds of offensive wizardry in […]

Waialua back in playoffs for first time since ’06

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2015

The Bulldogs are back. Waialua lost its football finale to Radford, 35-0, on Friday, but still qualified for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II playoffs when Nanakuli defeated Kalani 22-6 on Saturday. Both the Bulldogs (5-4 overall) and the Falcons finished at 4-4 in the league, but Waialua won the tiebreaker for the fourth seed due to a 21-16 victory in the head-to-head matchup with Kalani on Aug. 14. Wow, talk about early-season games meaning something! And now the fourth-seeded […]

Saints make their case in hot ILH Division II race

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2015

If you were looking for a nice, clean separation of teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II football standings, you have been recently disappointed. St. Francis threw a wrench into things and did not finish its regular season like it started. After losing their first two league games, the Saints stopped playing like a newbie (they’re in their third season of varsity football) and developed into a solid contender. Contender? Yes, with two straight wins, St. Francis (4-4, […]

Breaking the Hearts of Iron Men

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2015

In the bittersweet, painful end, the Ironmen of Kaiser could not have done much more. At 4-3 in league play, Kaiser was the higher seed in its OIA Division I playoff matchup with Campbell (1-6), but this was not the same Sabers team that began the season with big holes to fill. A rejuvenated, healthy and, as of now, well-seasoned Campbell squad jumped out to a 21-7 lead and eked out a 27-21 win on Saturday at Kaiser Stadium. It […]
