LIVE BLOG: Waianae 20, Farrington 19, F

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2015

There are championship games and there are final battles to survive. Seventh-ranked Farrington (7-3) and sixth-ranked Waianae (7-3) are simply doing this: playing for the right to play in the state tournament. The loser is done for the season. These programs go back a long time, all right. But playing each other in an ELIMINATION GRIDIRON BATTLE? Brother-in-arms Jerry Campany examined this earlier today in this post. FYI, the OIA junior varsity game is over. Kahuku 27, Waianae 7. That […]

Fred the Magician: Radford’s trickeration

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2015

It was David against Goliath on Friday night. For a second time, Goliath prevailed, but it took all the Radford Rams had to get past the Kaimuki Bulldogs, turning a 7-6 halftime score into a 28-6 win in the OIA Division II title game. What the deeper team, Radford, used to get an edge was the speed of Blaise Manabe and the craft of coach Fred Salanoa. It also took vast patience, sitting on plays for an entire OIA season. […]

Ram Tough: Defense leads Radford to title

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2015

Waialua pushed Radford hard before the Rams ran […]

OIA third place: Win or go home

By Jerry Campany on October 31, 2015

It is probably the most emotional game of the OIA season. While Kahuku and Mililani left their hearts on the turf at Aloha Stadium in the OIA title game on Friday, Farrington and Waianae will be playing for something much more on Saturday. The loser goes home. Farrington coach Randall Okimoto has been involved in six such games, way more than any other coach, and he won five of them. But his lone loss came to Waianae in 2005 and […]

Kahuku-Mililani: twists, turns … breaks

By Nick Abramo on October 31, 2015

When Vavae Tata arrived on the North Shore to become Kahuku’s head coach in the spring, Hirkley Latu didn’t know what to expect. The Red Raiders safety who now plays linebacker was part of a special team a year ago, a team that was defense-heavy with an offense that struggled. They went far, but first-year head coach Lee Leslie returned to the mainland and Latu was nervous that whoever came in might ruin a good thing. Latu’s worries were over […]
