Kahoohanohano-Davis was on the prowl

By Nick Abramo on November 6, 2015

Once in a while when a pack of football players on opposing teams go at it in a physical battle, one player’s spotlight shines a little brighter than the rest, even if he isn’t an integral part of the outcome. Such was the case last night at Aloha Stadium, when Baldwin’s La‘akea Kahoohanohano-Davis played in a 21-6 first-round Division I state-tournament loss to Waianae. He can motor. Take into consideration some of these stupendous plays by Kahoohanohano-Davis, the Bear wearing […]

Waianae keeps legacy alive

By Paul Honda on November 6, 2015

Coach Walter Young played at Waianae and was a longtime assistant before taking the helm this year. Young is head of the math department and has helped his team produce massive numbers through the sum of the parts rather than one or two supersized components. During the OIA Red regular season, the Seariders’ modified wing-T offense rolled up single-game point totals of 43, 36, 50, 90, 69 and 62 points. The Seariders haven’t done a lot of things differently. They […]

Baldwin gets offense going

By Paul Honda on November 6, 2015

SSince a shutout loss to Maui, Baldwin has scored at least 30 points every night out in a six-game win streak, including last week’s 56-7 rout of Maui in the MIL D-I championship game. The Bears ran the ball more than 71 percent of the time in the title game, but also limited the Sabers to 170 yards of total offense. Cruise Ah Chan (6-2, 225) anchors the offensive line and Kamaki Gouveia (5-9, 170) leads the ball-carrying corps. Former […]

Hilo ready to meet ‘Goliath’

By Paul Honda on November 6, 2015

It is, as Hilo coach Kaeo Drummondo says, “David vs. Goliath.” “Arguably, the best running back in the state that we have to contain. One of the best quarterbacks if he comes back. One of the best receivers,” Drummondo said. The Vikings overcame their own set of obstacles, including the loss of head coach David Baldwin early in the year. He was suspended by administration for an unspecified incident during preseason with no state timeline for return. Hilo suffered in […]

Tagovailoa is on MaxPreps POY watch

By Nick Abramo on November 6, 2015

Saint Louis lefty quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is on the MaxPreps National Player of the Year Watch. The website’s Watch this week showcases 10 juniors across the nation who are having huge seasons. One of them is Tagovailoa, who has led the top-ranked Crusaders to an 8-1 record, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship and a bye in the first round of the Division I state tournament. “The state of Hawaii could have the next Marcus Mariota in current Saint Louis […]

Kahoohanohano-Davis prepares in style

By Nick Abramo on November 5, 2015

The idea for this post came Wednesday while sitting in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser sports department. Sportswriter Billy Hull was watching a video of a Baldwin football player and said, “Look at this. This kid is incredible. I don’t know if it’s his speed or if the other players are just slow.” OK, so we were about to tape a segment for StarAdvertiser.com — two talking heads — about the football state-tournament openers this weekend. Baldwin (8-3) is playing Waianae (8-3) at […]

The square roots of Waianae football

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2015

Walter Young the Math Teacher is about numbers. Walter Young the Football Coach is about trust. And roots. And especially, education. As a youngster, his penchant for solving math problems led to a college education, which led to a desire to teach. And a will to coach. As head of the math department, he’s a builder as much as he is a math whiz. The accolades of Waianae’s science program are a lofty standard worth comparison. “The math program, we’re […]
