Saint Louis lefty quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is on the MaxPreps National Player of the Year Watch.
The website’s Watch this week showcases 10 juniors across the nation who are having huge seasons. One of them is Tagovailoa, who has led the top-ranked Crusaders to an 8-1 record, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship and a bye in the first round of the Division I state tournament.
“The state of Hawaii could have the next Marcus Mariota in current Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa,” Kevin Askeland of MaxPreps wrote for the national audience on the site. “Like Mariota, who was also a Saint Louis quarterback, Tagovailoa can beat you with the pass or the run.”
Tagovailoa has followed up his highliy successful sophomore campaign with 2,266 yards passing and 21 touchdowns so far this year while also rushing for 424 yards and eight TDs.
The Crusaders open state-tournament play next Friday in the semifinals against the winner of Friday night’s No. 2 Mililani (9-2) vs. Hilo (7-4) first-round game at Aloha Stadium.
