By Nick Abramo on November 30, 2015

Fred Salanoa is going out on top, stepping down as head coach of the Radford football team after 13 seasons. Salanoa’s Rams won the Division II state championship with a 30-16 victory over Kapaa on Nov. 20 at Aloha Stadium. Salanoa said he wants to spend more time with his family that includes seven daughters. “It’s time to move forward,” Salanoa said. “Any coach would probably be lying if he told you that he wouldn’t miss coaching. It’s time to […]

Kamehameha senior Tainoa Foster has a big month of January ahead of him. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound linebacker — who holds offers from Hawaii, Washington State, Utah State and Fresno State — will take official visits to three different Division I schools in consecutive weekends in January. He’ll start with a trip to Pullman, Wash., on the 15th to visit the Cougars, who went 8-4 this season. ‘Iolani’s Keoni-Kordell Makekau is also scheduled to visit Washington State that weekend and more from […]

‘Iolani’s Makekau enjoys trip to Navy

By Billy Hull on November 25, 2015

‘Iolani senior Keoni-Kordell Makekau currently holds three Division I offers but is waiting to hopefully have more options before making his college choice. The 5-foot-10, 168-pound wide receiver, whose offer list consists of Navy, Washington State and Hawaii, took an official visit to Navy two weekends ago and found the school similar to his current high school. He attended the Midshipmen’s 55-14 win over SMU and somehow stayed warm despite taking only shorts with him on the trip. The temperature […]

Title-game official makes ESPN’s “C’mon, Man!”

By Nick Abramo on November 23, 2015

While in the Aloha Stadium press dugout room that is usually reserved for photographers, I was writing about Radford’s 30-16 victory over Kapaa in the Division II football state championship game on Friday night. The Division I title game was in progress and Kahuku had just scored its first touchdown to make it 7-6. I got up to watch the play on the jumbotron and stayed up to watch the extra point that appeared to sail wide right. After telling […]

ILH football first team all-stars, 1920-present

By Jerry Campany on November 23, 2015

Wayne Taulapapa has always been more about winning as a team than as an individual. But this season, for the first time in his career, the Buffanblu turned in their pads before turning the calendar to November so there is not much left other than individual awards. Taulapapa got a big one on Monday night, being named to the ILH first team for the third year in a row. He wasn’t the offensive MVP, but he was recognized for what […]

Kahuku makes No. 1 ranking count

By Hawaii Prep World on November 23, 2015

Kahuku’s 39-14 win over Saint Louis to claim the Division I state football title last Friday night left no doubt. It also sent a message to voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 rankings not to count out the OIA quite so quick. For the second year in a row, the lower-ranked OIA team knocked off the higher-ranked ILH team in the state championship to claim the final HSA No. 1 ranking of the year. In 2014, Punahou held the […]

Kapolei’s Auwae opens up recruitment

By Hawaii Prep World on November 23, 2015

Kapolei senior offensive lineman Toleafoa Sean Auwae opened up his recruiting on Monday announcing on Twitter he is no longer committed to UCLA. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder was named to the All-OIA Blue first team last week after helping the Hurricanes advance to the OIA quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Kahuku to end the season. Auwae committed to UCLA in mid-August but took a trip to Vanderbilt during the weekend of the state football semifinals. Vanderbilt was one of […]
