Clearing the notebook (and other stuff)

By Nick Abramo on January 4, 2016

Once in a while, a reporter will come across a pretty good idea that doesn’t find its way into the newspaper or the web. Such was the case during the whirlwind ending of the fall sports season. Yes, it’s true, we are well into the winter season now, and so, yes, this is old hat. But worth writing about, if only in one person’s opinion. OK, while on assignment on Kauai and in a conversation with former Waimea coach and […]

Santiago leads USA Today defense

By Jerry Campany on January 1, 2016

The USA Today released its all state team for Hawaii football, and the names at the top are the same as the Star-Advertiser’s list. Vavae Malepeai of Mililani is the offensive player of the year, and Kahuku’s Keala Santiago and Vavae Tata are the state’s top defensive player and coach. The list is representative of the whole state, especially on defense where the Red Raiders landed only two players with Hirkley Latu joining Santiago. Tata was adamant with local media […]

By Billy Hull on December 30, 2015

Punahou senior Wayne Taulapapa is back on the recruiting market. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound running back wrote on Twitter Wednesday that he is no longer committed to BYU after a recent coaching change. Former Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall took the head job at Virginia and was replaced last week by Kalani Sitake. “With something new comes change,” Taulapapa wrote on Twitter. “I am decommitted from BYU and have re opened my recruitment. I trust that God has a plan.” Taulapapa won […]

Malepeai leads Star-Advertiser All-State team

By Jerry Campany on December 25, 2015

Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai left Aloha Stadium disappointed last month after his Trojans fell short of another state title, but he had to know that one game does not define a career. The Oregon commit broke Joe Igber‘s touchdown record this year and has accepted a haul of awards. But other than the Hall of Honor, today’s might be the biggest. He is the Star-Advertiser’s Offensive Player of the Year. Kahuku’s Keala Santiago is the defensive player of the year and […]
