HHSAA makes changes to state football tourney

The HHSAA voted Monday to add a third tier to the state football tournament, creating an Open division to go along with both Division I and Division II tournaments. The first regular-season USA Today Super 25 rankings came out Monday with only one new addition. Defending Hawaii state champion Kahuku is ranked No. 25 in the country after rolling to wins over Leilehua and Aiea to start the season. Kahuku, which has won 15 straight games and won a fan contest sponsored by USA Today finding American’s best football program, is ranked No. 5 in the West Region. Hawaii High School Football Recruiting Tracker. It’s been a pretty nice weekend for Kahuku teammates Kekaula Kaniho and Aliki Vimahi. First, they took part in a 50-7 thumping of Aiea on Friday night to stretch the top-ranked Red Raiders’ winning streak to 15 games dating back to the end of the 2014 season. As might be expected with June Jones on the coaching staff and Taulia Tagovailoa behind center, Kapolei’s run-pass ratio was decidedly tilted toward the aerial attack in the Hurricanes’ first two games.
