Blues in the Governors’ mansion

By Paul Honda on August 28, 2016

So many highlights, it almost hurts to think about what if. The Pride of Kalihi, Gov Nation, simply bleeding a wee bit of maroon. Seventh-ranked Farrington can only wonder after a 31-28 loss at No. 6 Mililani that was full of as many fits and stops as it was glorious, clutch plays. For Randall Okimoto, Farrington’s first loss after two wins in the OIA Red came down to execution under pressure, or the lack thereof. “For me, the turning point […]

The relentless will of Mill Vill

By Paul Honda on August 28, 2016

He’s been at this life-sized version of human chess for some time. Rod York has a practically all-new starting lineup at Mililani, and though some long-time Trojan fans will admit they’re surprised that their team is still unbeaten after three games, they do know this: the 2016 men of Troy are well prepared. After hanging on for a 31-28 win over No. 7 Farrington on Saturday night, York could only think about the miscues. About sitting down with his staff […]

Leilehua finds offensive groove in second half

By Nick Abramo on August 28, 2016

After starting the season with three straight losses to Top 10 teams, Leilehua didn’t exactly get a break for its fourth game. It’s not easy going into Nanakuli Valley to face the Golden Hawks and the Mules found themselves in a close ballgame Friday night, leading by just seven points at the half. Nine players caught at least one pass for Leilehua (1-3, 1-2 OIA Red), which put together a 27-point third quarter on the way to a 48-13 victory. […]

Falcons focusing on the little things

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 28, 2016

A week after pulling out a close win, Kalani saw one slip away on Saturday. A miscue on an attempted punt resulted in a tie-breaking safety and the Falcons’ rally fell short in a 16-14 loss at Waialua’s Toshiyuki “Tosh” Nakasone Football Field. Waialua followed the safety with a scoring drive that gave the Bulldogs a 16-7 lead with 7:06 left in the fourth quarter. The Falcons drove into Waialua territory but two holding calls and a sack halted that […]

Waialua hangs on to pick up first win

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 28, 2016

After Waialua had stunningly taken the lead on a fourth quarter safety, Bulldogs senior Lancen Kuni had one thing on his mind as he dropped back to field the ensuing free kick. “Don’t fumble,” he said. “Don’t drop the ball, don’t muff it. Kind of just say poised and basically don’t drop that ball.” Kuni not only fielded the punt cleanly, but returned it 27 yards to set up a Waialua scoring drive that ultimately held up in the Bulldogs’ […]

‘Iolani working to prove it belongs in D-I

By Christian Shimabuku on August 28, 2016

Changes to the state football tournament haven’t changed ‘Iolani’s outlook. As far as they’re concerned, there’s still a full ILH season to be played. The Raiders (3-0) face Saint Louis, Kamehameha and Punahou twice each over the next six weeks, starting with the Crusaders on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. “We’re gonna have to battle and play pretty flawless to stay in the hunt,” coach Wendell Look said. “We’re going to face teams that are physically bigger and just better […]
