Defense keys Campbell’s overtime win

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 17, 2016

Defense defined Campbell’s first home game in nearly two years. While the Sabers gave away five turnovers against Moanalua on Friday, they countered with six takeaways and limited a prolific Na Menehune offense to 118 yards in total offense in a 12-6 win in double overtime on Friday night. Jaylen Ignatowski came up with Campbell’s first two turnovers with a fumble recovery and an interception in the first half. The Sabers and Na Menehune traded turnovers on a single play […]

Piceno takes charge on senior night

By Stan Lee on September 17, 2016

Kaleo Aloha Piceno did about everything to lead his seniors to a win on senior night. The versatile Piceno accounted for three touchdowns in Friday’s 41-14 win over Castle. He ran for a touchdown, threw for another and caught a scoring pass from fellow quarterback Kona Andres. “He does it all for us,” said Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda. Two of Piceno’s touchdowns came during a 21-0 run in the first half. He hauled in an 80-yard pass from Andres and […]

UCF coaches tell Milton he’s starting vs. Maryland

By Nick Abramo on September 17, 2016

Former Mililani star quarterback McKenzie Milton will be the starter for UCF in its game against Maryland on Saturday, according to Mark Milton, McKenzie’s dad. “UCF coches told McKenzie that he is starting tomorrow night versus Maryland,” Mark Milton texted Hawaii Prep World on Friday. “They are not going to redshirt him.” A freshman at UCF this fall, McKenzie Milton led the Trojans to the Division I state championship two seasons ago. He was hurt last year, when Mililani was […]

Kapolei’s new weaponry on display

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2016

It’s not common for a team that’s rolling along with a 5-1 record (4-1 in league play) to wonder, could there be more? The Kapolei Hurricanes are, so to speak, in a calm before the storm. With the return of some key players from injury — three of them on offense who hadn’t played a snap of regular-season football until Friday night — their explosive offense is suddenly in a bit of a reboot. It’s not an overhaul by any […]

Pacific’s Hawaii players enjoy ‘homecoming’

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 16, 2016

By design, Trey Kodama came up a few credits shy of completing his business degree at Pacific University last spring. Kodama was on track to finish his undergraduate work in finance and marketing in four years, but held off on taking his final class until the fall, thereby extending his football career with the Boxers and giving himself an opportunity to play one more game in Hawaii. The fifth-year senior and Kamehameha graduate returns to the Kapalama campus Saturday for […]

The day the Govs won it all (in Nevada)

By Jerry Campany on September 16, 2016

Even though it is ancient history, it has been done before. As Kahuku prepares to meet Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas on Saturday, it can take some comfort in the fact that it is not the first Hawaii team to travel to beat the Gaels and return to the islands a winner. Farrington did the trick way back in 1968, when a team that included Randy Cadiente, Onosai Tanuvasa, Russ Onaga, Wilfred Makaehu, Howard Ilae and Cliff LaBoy made the […]

A Sept. 6 letter signed by league president Wade Araki was sent to Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director Chris Chun. Chun responded in a letter dated Sept. 9 addressing Araki’s issues. Here are the concerns expressed by the OIA and the responses from Chun: OIA: 1. The legitimacy […]

Score Prediction: Bishop Gorman vs. Kahuku

By Hawaii Prep World on September 16, 2016

According to USA Today’s high school sports scoring predictor (and just about everyone else), the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, Bishop Gorman, has the advantage against No. 17 Kahuku. USA Today’s interactive game simulator predicts the Gaels to defeat the Red Raiders, 41-14. It uses data to compare the two teams and plays multiple simulations to determine the most likely result. Bishop Gorman is 37-10 against non-Nevada opponents since 2004. The last time the Gaels lost to a Hawaii team was […]
