GAME NIGHT 10/21: Saint Louis/Punahou

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2016

No matter what happens Friday night in the ILH Division I title game between No. 2 Punahou and No. 3 Saint Louis, both teams will play in the state tournament. The creation of a three-tier format this year means neither of these teams will end their seasons in the ILH title game, taking away some of the pressure from years past. Still, an ILH title is on the line between the defending champion Crusaders (7-1) and the Buffanblu (7-1), who […]

GAME NIGHT 10/21: Damien/St. Francis

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2016

This is the game St. Francis wanted last season. The Saints (5-2) will play for their first ILH football championship against the defending league champs, the Monarchs (5-2), tonight at Aloha Stadium. The Saints lost their first 16 ILH games since forming a football program at the start of the 2013 season. Since beating Pac-Five 12-9 last year for their first league victory, St. Francis is 5-1 in league play with the only loss coming to Damien earlier this season. […]

GAME NIGHT 10/21: Waialua/Kaimuki

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2016

This might be Waialua’s best shot. The Bulldogs (5-2), who have never played a game in the state tournament, can clinch a berth this season with a victory over the other Bulldogs (5-3) tonight at Kaiser in the semifinals of the OIA Division II playoffs. The two teams return to the site of their Aug. 13 battle that was, perhaps, the most exciting game of the season. Kaimuki survived in overtime, 22-20, when Waialua overthrew the two-point conversion trailing by […]

GAME NIGHT 10/21: Pearl City/Waipahu

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2016

For much of the OIA Division II season, Pearl City held the top spot. The Chargers won their first five league games by an average of 22.8 points before losing to Kaimuki and Waialua, dropping Pearl City from the No. 1 seed to the No. 4 seed in the last week of the regular season. Now the Chargers (5-3) have to beat Waipahu (7-1) to clinch a berth in the OIA D-II final and spot in the state tournament. The […]

GAME NIGHT 10/21: Leilehua/Mililani

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2016

While ILH titles are decided in Division I and Division II and the semifinals of the OIA Division II playoffs happen Friday night, there’s the matter of this one OIA consolation game in Division I. Moanalua forfeited its game against Campbell due to injuries and illness, leaving Mililani to play Leilehua in the only OIA consolation playoff game this weekend at John Kauinana Stadium. The reason for the games was to determine seeding in the Division I state tournament this […]

Govs put their trust in One Family

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2016

As a coaching lifer, Randall Okimoto has been consistent. Gadgets and trickeration have their place in the longtime Farrington coach’s playbook, but one of his main focuses in any season — this is his 15th as head coach — is development. When the No. 6-ranked Governors meet No. 4 Kapolei in the OIA Division I football semifinals on Saturday at Aloha Stadium, Okimoto will be counting on everyone on his roster to be ready. More than two months into the […]

Nerdpod: Receivers v4.0

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2016

NERDPOD: Receivers v4.0 Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best pass catchers in the state. The regular season has drawn its curtain across the islands, but I’ll be adding more pass catchers to this list until the playoffs and state tourney are done, and maybe past that, too. This week, five additions. Numbers are nice, but seeing how they reflect a player’s season is usually intriguing. Even players who don’t have statistics that scratch the ceiling […]

Lee hopes to coach Friday prior to surgery

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2016

He’s been a healthy, strong person for all his life. That’s why Cal Lee’s health issue is shocking for his staff, players and fans across the state. Lee missed last week’s game between his Saint Louis Crusaders and ‘Iolani because of kidney stones. The longtime football coach is taking medication to heal an infection in the kidneys, and is scheduled to have surgery next week (Oct. 28). “The stone is too big,” he said on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s not going […]
