Skippa Diaz Stadium open for business

By Jerry Campany on August 3, 2017

Kamehameha and Farrington haven’t played a meaningful game since Onosai Tanuvasa toted the rock for the Governors more than 40 years ago, but Friday’s clash means more than most. The neighborhood rivals have met 19 times since the Governors left the ILH way back in 1969, but always in August or September. This time, though, they will christen brand new Skippa Diaz Stadium on the Farrington campus, and that will mean plenty to fans who are lucky enough to find […]

PREP FOOTBALL COUNTDOWN: No. 1 Saint Louis

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2017

Cal Lee was in a joking mood when told that he has never repeated for a state championship, and so he good-naturedly laughed it off. Technically, it’s true. The Saint Louis football coach won 14 Prep Bowl championships, including 13 in a row. He also has won two state championships, but those are 17 years apart. He earned the first one in the inaugural state championship season of 1999 and again in 2016. Voters have picked the Crusaders to repeat […]

PREP FOOTBALL COUNTDOWN: No. 2 Kahuku

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2017

The keys to the Big Red machine are jangling, and the driver is grinning from ear to ear. It wasn’t hard at all for now-sophomore quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava to see what life on the other side of the playbook could be like. A year ago, the spotlight was bright, maybe occasionally blinding after he received a scholarship offer from Michigan before his high school career had even begun. Then came a run to the OIA title, and a loss to […]

By Jerry Campany on August 3, 2017

Ask players, coaches and fans and they will all tell you that a preseason poll means little. In many ways they are right, but history tells us that the preseason poll is more than just ‘cotton candy,’ as Paul Honda so fondly calls it. Defending Open Division state champion Saint Louis is No. 1 in the 2017 Star-Advertiser preseason rankings. That in itself is not a huge surprise since every defending champion has started the following season ranked No. 1 […]

VIDEO: St. Francis/Kaimuki scrimmage

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2017

Two title contenders from two leagues in Division II met on Wednesday on a sunny, hot field at Kaimuki. St. Francis, which came very close to winning the ILH D-II crown last season, visited a dangerous Bulldogs squad that will contend for the OIA D-II title this fall. It was, all in all, a highlight-filled matchup featuring a first-year gunslinger at quarterback for St. Francis, as well as Kaimuki’s second-year standout at QB, Jordan Solomon.
