Ane looking to trip Lee for 4th straight year

By Jerry Campany on September 13, 2017

If you had to choose one coach to possibly outwit Saint Louis legend Cal Lee, Punahou’s Kale Ane would be near the top of the list. The legends will face off for the 15th time on Saturday at Aloha Stadium, and Ane can pull up behind former Damien and Pac-Five coach Don Botelho with his fifth win over Lee. Botelho went 6-35 against Lee in his career, while Ane is 4-10. Ane can become the first coach to beat Lee […]

Hilo, Kamehameha, Damien rise on Pupule ballot

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2017

One of the funny things about voting in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 is that logic is almost impossible to obey. For the most part, voters are swayed by provinciality. Some are influenced by the power of now, or recency bias. Others harken back to history and tradition when no sensible criteria remains. For me, the first five spots are the same as they were last week. After that, it’s a shuffling with a new team (Campbell) while another (Kapaa) […]

Waialua will play 2 games on home field

By Nick Abramo on September 12, 2017

The Waialua Bulldogs have been on the road all football season so far. But they’ll be playing at home soon. Earlier this season, newly planted grass on the Bulldogs’ field had yet to take a good enough hold. The grass is looking good now, according to athletic director Bryce Kaneshiro, and the school got two thumbs up from the Department of Education to play two home games. This Friday, Waialua’s game against McKinley will be in Waialua instead of at […]

Waianae to No. 7; Campbell enters Top 10

By Hawaii Prep World on September 11, 2017

The quest to be No. 1 is a no brainer right now. Saint Louis again remains the unanimous No. 1 in the state. After that, however, there are a wide range of opinions from two to 10 in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 released today. Kahuku, which was shut out 17-0 by Bingham (Utah) in the Polynesian Football Classic on Saturday without quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava (shoulder), remained the No. 2 team in the state. However, the gap between […]

Kapolei gets back on solid football ground

By Nick Abramo on September 10, 2017

That sinking feeling is over for Kapolei. The Hurricanes (3-3, 2-3 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red) broke a three-game losing streak by routing No. 8 Kailua 33-0 at Alex Kane Stadium on Saturday night. They did it by securing eight turnovers, a performance that may put them back into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10. Simply put, had it been a fourth loss in a row — to a ranked team — the hole may have been one that they may not […]

No. 3 Buffanblu prevail in pick-fest

By Brian McInnis on September 10, 2017

If we’re being charitable, there was a grand total of 29 completed passes in Saturday night’s ILH battle between No. 3 Punahou and No. 5 Kamehameha. But if we’re being truthful, seven of those 29 were brought down by guys with a different postgame load of laundry than the player who tossed the football. Seven interceptions — six in the first half — set the stage for an unpredictable battle between the old rivals. In the end it was the Buffanblu who […]
